There's one family of youngish boys down the street.  I can occasionally hear one of the fireworks going off.  In our community fireworks are not legally detonated.

As a young person I can remember the sound of fireworks all day long on the fourth of July and into the night.  I miss those days.  God bless America, my home sweet home.

I'm a Marine.  Lets not dangle temptation out there too readily.

The Marine Corps was founded 10 November 1775.  The Corps was ready to go on 4 July 1776.

Well my neighborhood has been blowing things up all week, and right now it's like little Beirut.

The sun is still up and the black powder (white) smoke on my street is heavy.

not care to spend money foolishly anymore on fireworks, but growing up and when my kids were young at home, always did some in the street in front of our house for 45 minutes or so.

my favorite growing up were called witch whistles.  U lit them and they flew 100 mph for about 40 feet and curved and flew anywhere not knowing where they would go.  Several times got lucky whistling by us never hitting us, but close.  Now am sure they are banned, too dangerous, which they were.

Our neighborhood and town were showing off fireworks from about dark till 11 last night.  Some of the displays were better than the town's display.  Thankfully none of the dried grass on the mountain above the town was ignited.

Yeah, we played with lady fingers, sparklers, and some m80's.  The latter were not legal in OK in those days, so trips to KS for refills were taken.

I live in the country so there's always someone shooting or blowing something off. Kenny Johnson down the road blew his hand off last year. We now call him wis-bang Johnson. Then there was Bo Bo who is gone now of old age. He blew his arm off years ago fishing.  Shocked

After her spending the last 1.5 months living in a tent in the desert, we were blessed to have the elder spawn join us for the holiday. We attended the large municipal event, good music, lots of fun was had, decent fireworks.

On the way home all the illicit firework shows could be seen in all directions, and we heard the celebrations continue on into the wee hours of the morning, as one should in a semi-free society.

This morning the elder spawn notified us that her company, which evidently has a reputation as the party company, had an incident last night, many soldiers had imbibed a wee bit too much in the barracks, and were shooting off mortar fireworks.

...without using the tubes to launch them; instead they were holding them in their hand, lighting the fuse, waiting what they thought was an appropriate amount of time then throwing them in the air.

Until one soldier waited too long, and might need to learn to write left handed now.

...and the company continued their illicit festivities as CID was cleaning up the mess from the errant soldier as well.....

I've recommended, although she is assigned as a member of this company, and she should be present some to enforce esprit de corps, she should limit her after hours social activities with this company.

As I lay in bed listening to the fireworks into the night, my mind asked this;  Is all this blowing off fireworks patriotism for the spirit of founding our nation, or just pyromania?

I suppose it's both.

My flag needs washed.

I did wonder the same last night.  We had some really loud fireworks near our home.  Luckily they stopped prior to our bedtime.

While I love fireworks and pyrotechnics, I have a hard time shelling out the money for them.  To me it is like setting fire to your hard earned cash.  Just curious, has inflation affected the price of fire works?

Prior years the family would gather at my aunt's farm and do fireworks, we'd usually get a few hundred dollars from each part of the family, usually spend somewhere in the $700-$1000 range and put on a really good show.

This year my aunt requested we not do it due to dry conditions, but I was shopping around just to get an idea, a box or mortars I'd previously (As in 2-3 years back at most) gotten for around $10 was advertised as a super special on sale deal at $30.....

In some cases, yes.  In some cases, no.  Inflation doesn't make things cost more.  It makes our money worth less.  When things were costing a lot fewer dollars we also had a lot fewer dollars.

I haven't bought fireworks in the past few years.  Even when I did it was because we had young people to enjoy the experience.  I still enjoy a good pyro show but probably not as much as I once did.

At least the shotgun blasts at midnight seem to have stopped.

I used to load up my .44 Colt's Dragoon with 60grains of FFFG per chamber and wads, and no ball and fire it 6 times.

No slugs, but 5 feet of flame, big booms and lots of smoke.  Not this year.

Update on the errant soldier playing throw the firework - they saved his hand, but he's out one pinky finger now.

I've made a few suggestions for new nicknames they could use.

Manoman....I look back to age 12 or so the neighborhood kids would set boundaries of about 30 yds and you couldn't get out of those boundaries and stay in the game.   It took two kids to a team.    One would bazooka style hold and aim a 6' stick of pvc while your team mate would stick a bottle rocket in the rear end of the pvc and light it.....geeeeez.
