My bill at Ace hardware was $11.80. Two fives , six quarters , three dimes.. New kid. Trainer behind him.
Rings up the sale, Takes the two fives , three quarters and a dime. Pushes back my dollar and gives me another nickel.  I gave him $11.80. I received $1.05 change. I said you gave me change when I gave you exact money. He said he did not make a mistake. The trainer said nothing.
Want a discount , pay in cash.   Tomorrow I will see the store manager, I know her.

Trainer is probably as dumb as the trainee, I see it so often it's pathetic. One hotel we checked into had a computer system down due to a storm so we filled out paperwork by hand, including my credit card which lit her up. We can't take a CC due to the storm, we can only take cash. I asked why does the form then have a place for a CC #? "Oh, that's for emergencies!"  Me..."ooook...so what would you call this situation?" Crickets! I then gave her cash for the one night, paid in even dollars which was more than the charge so she hit the panic button...then remembered her cell phone to figure out my change. I told her it $2.38 but the response was "I don't think so, has to be more than that." A moment later she sheepishly said "uh...it's $2.38 but how did you do that so fast?" I asked if she was ready for a quick lesson..yes!

I then asked what the amount of the bill was, gave me the correct answer. I then told her remember what I gave you...which she did. I then said start counting from the amount of the bill up to the amount I gave her...pulling out change as she counted up which she did. When done she's standing there all stupified with $2.38 in her hand. "How did you learn that trick, it's so easy!" I told her it was back when they taught math instead of politics in school and walked away.

When I started pumping gas at 15, I was told to count out the change from the charged amount, out loud.

OK, so your bill was 12.50, and you gave me a twenty... so 13.50, 14.50, yada, and fifty cents makes 20.

Using this simple lesson, I never made a mistake.

Used this same method on my Detroit News paper route at 11 years old.  Great experience and life lesson(s).

So you're the luddite holding up the checkout line by insisting on paying with cash!   2funny

You puppy you. There wasn't a need for checkbooks when I was young. Every store had a stack of "counter checks" right there at the cash register.
Your check written out on a piece of paper was good too, even if the paper was a napkin.

Especially at fast food restaurants, I've been known to pull out a $10 or $20 bill (depending on the amount of the order) let them ring it up and then tell them to hang on and give them whatever the .00 amount was.

Let's say that the order was $11.80

I might pull out a $20 bill and after they've rang that in ask them to hold on a minute and hand them an additional .80 cents.

The Deer in the Headlights look ALWAYS comes next.

The register is telling them that the change is $8.20

They cannot process that my giving them an additional .80 means that they owe an even $9 in change.

Mostly this just seems to confuse them and/or make them mad.

But, When they will let me I use this as a teaching moment.

If the spousal unit is with me she usually accuses me of being a Smart A$$.

I just tell her that sometimes people need to be taught things.

In defense of the cashiers who can't do cash transactions easily - IMHO it's not that they're dumb, it's that it's a skill that's atrophied due to lack of use or need...

Much like the ability to do long division in your head, read or write Latin, writing cursive, drive a horse and buggy, look something up in the Yellow Pages, the Dewey Decimal System, etc. etc... The skillsets needed for modern life, used on a daily basis, change over time.

These days about the only times I use cash are at the Ren Faire (And even there is adding the ability to use cards) and when purchasing freedom dispensers or freedom dispenser accessories...

Cash is king for workmen, tradesmen, plumbers, carpenters, roofers, bike maintenance.  It almost always earns a discount (and often head of the line).

If they take a card or check, they get cash for a tip (if the work is good).

Either way, they remember when/if I call them again.

My plumber lives in my neighborhood, and last time I called about a small problem, he brought the parts I needed right over.... gratis.   Smiley

I'd like to pay my semiannual property tax bill in pennies... but it would result in a hernia.   Grin

I’m not sure if your theory holds up. I think all the Mary Jane shops require cash.  Smiley

I had  a similar issue in the past. Lets say the same $11.80. I give her $21.80. She says I gave her to much cash , the $20.00 will cover it. I told her to just enter it.  She counted back ten "ones". Give me a ten dollar bill.  She said the change on the machine was ten dollars , that is what she is giving me so she doesn't get in trouble.

Math and cursives not taught in schools. B U T they must teach screwing , as they are re populating??  crazy2

Went out this morning after coffee to test freedom dispenser, and a m proud to say all is working well.  Then a motorcycle ride.  What a wonderful day in the neighborhood.

That used to be the case, and I would always have cash on hand to offer and often get a lower price for doing so, however there's been a shift in the last few years and I've had many experiences where offering cash, they would ask if I could do card instead.

..."It just makes the accounting so much simpler" is usually the reply when I give them a funny look...

Most of the guys I give cash are doing side work from any company employment.  Except the small Hispanic outfits that are all over my neck of the woods; they always want cash.  And they always do good work.

And we never tell.   Smiley

But I have noticed a shift to saying a card or check will be fine.  (So maybe they are paying taxes.   Grin)

We had to put in corporate tills in this year. (DQ) something about its in the contract. Damn things won't let you sell stuff like a side of fudge with your qt of ice cream. if there ain't a button for it you can't sell it. There is no misc. button.  Also will not work without giving the change due. We still require all of our employees to count back the change, also when it displays the change due it can "remove" your train of thought, Still getting use to these things
