Hey everyone,  I am new to the club. I've owned my 97 Valk for 4 years now. And being that it was always a bucket list bike for me I will own it for many years. That being said, I need a propeller shaft bad! I also need to confirm that the part for the 98 to 03 Valks will fit the 97. Because I have been told that acquiring the exact part for the 97 is near impossible. Any and all help is appreciated!

Only some parts for 97s are different, and I don't think the propeller (drive) shaft is one of them.  I could be wrong.  The way to check is to use the below parts seller website and look up later year models and see if they are all the same or different part numbers.  But it appears the 97 Valk shaft is available.

Part No 2 below.

As long as you're at it I would look at getting the shaft seal.

Part number 16 too

At one time the 97 drive shaft was different and twice as expensive. They are now all the same but if you did locate and old stock ‘97 one it would be over $100.

Guys, thank you so much. It looks like the site that was provided may have the shaft! I think $129  is a bit crazy. But "them that's got da gold, make da rules!" LOL.

I don’t know why you “need a propeller shaft bad!”  However, the following mechanical practices will almost always save money and down time in the end.

1) Never replace the shaft or the cup alone!  Always replace both the pinion cup and the propeller shaft at the same time because they create a wear pattern between them.  Changing one without the other will increase the speed of wear on both pieces.

2) A new pinion cup seal is cheap.  That seal runs under extreme heat, flexing and scuffing conditions and if it fails, the shaft and cup will quickly follow.  Install a new seal every time!

Good luck and enjoy the ride!
