Love it or hate it. Why did it not catch on?

My guess is the insane (especially for the time) asking price of around $24,000.  Personally, I love the styling of the Rune, and might someday pick one up just because they are cool and different.

You can knock 10 k off the new price, and get a new or near new one these days.  I know they are fine machines, have seen a few close up, but the styling kept me off one as much as the price.   Cry hoser

I wouldn't mind having one as a 'bar hopper', but I'll keep my good ol' '97, for cruzin' the country Cheesy

Well price maybe the issue and touring capability was an issue for sure, no bags.

But other things caught on like Velcro.

I agree with Black Dog, would make a good bar hopper but not to take on a long trip. Plus the price was waaaaaay out of the ball park. I kind of like them but if I owned one I would have to chop that rear fender some.

I learned about Valkyries when I saw Frank Smoak's awesome red and white at a bike rally in
Charleston SC.

I couldn't get them off my mind. When I got home I hit Honda's web pages and kept
finding Runes... wha??!! Finally google led me to the sad truth (and also to the VRCC, Yay!)
but I was left with a kind of sour feeling about Runes...

VRCC members who have them, like them, though - not a Valkyrie, but it does have
that killer motor!

I'm sure the price was a factor but their are plenty of bikes being sold in that price range every day. Goldwings are at 22-24K now for heavens sake! The problem is that the Rune was never going to be a volume bike as it was said that Honda was losing money as it was( not sure I believe that, accounting practices ect.) and you can't build any following or "heritage" for a bike that is only made for a few years. There are still Harleys being dug out of barns, garages, sheds, ect. People bought Runes as "investments", not the way to build a following. As it is Honda doesn't try to promote each line of bike as they could if they wanted to create a following. Legendary reliability has been their best selling feature but people still pick a design from the 40's for all kinds of other reasons.

I loved it when it came out.  cooldude

The price was a problem - if you are going to spend that kind of money, get a Harley!  Grin

I still have thoughts of getting one "down the road" when finances improve. - (Does anyone have a good paying job for a cute little Japanese lady?  Cool coolsmiley)

Not pratical, I mean even less pratical than motorcycles in general.

For the same money you could get a real nice bike that you could do more than go around the block on.
I would have one if I could justify the expense though.

If you think you don't like a Rune then NEVER ride one. One ride will change your mind. Sweet Valkyries.

I like, now give me one.

I sent my wife out for the test ride when we located a nice used Rune.   The grin on her face as she rode back into the dealer's lot said it all.

After that, it was a daily battle to decide if I was going to ride it to work, or let her.   So, we did the only thing we could under the circumstance:  found her one of her own.   Now there' two Runes in my garage, and I still haven't figured out where to park the Valk when I find just the right deal on one.

Anyone interested in a great condition, low mileage, 2006 C90T Suzuki Bouvelvard?  Black in color.  She seldom rides it any more after getting her Rune.   Smiley

I think it was priced to high to catch on. And it was to wildly customized on way off the shelf to really play with.
Just my 2 cents.
I'd have one if I could afford it. I'd paint it green and wear mouse ears. Maybe one day.

I believe that Honda has balls and places some things on the market with more than profit in mind.
I wish they still made the Valk too-kinda.
I think with some of these bikes (or cars, whatever) they are trying to improve their brand.
They "Fury" probably fits into this same category, although much cheaper than the Rune.

Good question Steamer. In tough economic times the gov't is a great employer.  coolsmiley

Now, back to the Rune. Here is a link to a video of the Driving TV review in 2006 or so. Atlantans will recognize the reviewer, Dagmar Midcap!  Wink
(There is a 15 second commercial first, then the review; be patient.)

And I think Ronnie would look great on this Rune from Barbers:
