Have a 01 Interstate the the prior owner has installed a tank bib on it.  The key that was provided broke off while in the cap.  I know normally you press down the cap to release the key but it did not depress.   Ordered a new cap and removed and replaced the old one.   Tried out the releasing mechanism to insure the key release happened. Closed the cap but it would not release the key.   It is like the cap is not being depressed enough to release the lock.   Any help would be greatly appreciated.   Have read the boards for this topic but apparently no one else encountered the problem…

Look at the gasket side of the cap - has a PO added an O-ring or extra seal? That is, after you get it open. If this is the problem, you will have to lean harder on the cap.

Press harder or get ride of the tank bib sounds like...

With locks, a healthy dose of Lock Ease and working the key with the lube in can never hurt.

One of my interstate tanks gives me occasional key trouble.  I have to push down on the cap harder.

With such a problem in conjunction with a tank bib, I found the bib was simply too thick thereby raising the outer chrome housing too much. That was using a bib that fit under the chrome housing by maybe 1/4". I was able to remove the bib and literally sanded down the side that faces the tank. After a few times, I got the bib thin enough on the part that was under the chrome housing. Before messing with the bib, try removing it and then use the key. If it seems to work ok without the bib in place, that's your answer.  cooldude

Interesting. My tank bib fits around the chrome bit, not under. Not sure how I could fit anything under the chrome, or even lift it any.

Mine fits under the chrome, made by Hopnel, sold by Big Bike Parts / Show Chrome.
You have to push a little harder to get the key to release.
