I Almost Made It There

I've been riding motorcycles for many years.   I have rode my Valkyrie from Houston Tx area to Sturgis just to see the area back about 15 yrs ago.  It's a beautifull area...lots to see.  I have never been to Sturgis during the rally.

Today.... I ALMOST made it to Sturgis for the rally that starts on Aug 4 2023.  I made it as far as Rapid City, South Dakota....just a few miles from Sturgis.  

Let me explain.....my son and 7 of his buddies on their Harleys have been on a motorcycle trip for 10 days and toured NM, Wyoming, South Dakota, and Colorado.  Six of the guys are going on for another week or so but my son and one other guy have to be back for major business meetings so they flew home to Houston area Monday and left their Harleys at Black Hills Harley Davidson Dealership in Rapid City Monday morning.   As prearranged he is paying me and my wife's and our travel buddies expenses to pull his 30' enclosed trailer with his dually F350 from Houston area to the dealership in Rapid City to pick up their bikes.   A free road trip....I love it!!   Picked up the bikes this morning and now headed back towards Houston area by way of Winter Park Colorado tomorrow to ride the ski lift gondola up to the top of the ski lift....then its hammer down for Houston.....well....I almost made it to the Sturgis rally.  Lot of bikes already in Rapid City headed there....maybe another time

If I remember correctly me and my three riding friends from years past (2004-2015) rode through Sturgis twice on our trips out west.  I was sort of amazed at the small size of the town or area.   

But it seems to be up to the task each year.

Visited during our time in Spearfish. Been there , done it , got the T-shirts. Not interested in the rally.
 At the hotel in Spearfish , we paid around a $100.00 or so for the room. Clerk said that room for Sturgis week would go for $1000.00.   Don't know, just hearsay.

  Pretty cool trip to help out your son and friend. Great reason to get back up to the Sturgis area I'd say.

A very cool road trip, glad you got to do it.

In another life, I used to be a part time "Hot Shotter", I've transported several loads through Strugis during motorcycle week, I've been flashed several times but that show isn't worth the traffic I had to drive through.   

I'm not a big crowd person, just not something I enjoy.   I agree it is beautiful country and love riding through that area, just not during that week.

We got to Winter Park Ski Resort couple hrs ago to ride the Gondola up the mountain.   It's been broke down since we got here.  They are working on by it still.  Looks like "I Almost Got To Ride The Gondola At Winter Park"......ha
