They make fun of me for riding around in 4th gear a lot
of the time when they are in 5th...

It just feels right... eats gas though...

Based on my experience and limited knowledge, I agree.
It's never good to lug your engine. Every engine has a sweet spot. Find it and your engine will last a very long time.

I have found riding the eastern Ky mountain roads that I use forth a lot and third more than I ever imagined, other than for acceleration to reach fifth. Fortunately I like running up through the gears at elevated rpm levels when the opportunity arises, but high rpm “cruising” is not my forte.

I run 4th gear if I know the area and hilly or curvy where constant 50-55 mph is needed most of the time. 5th gear just seems to wimpy at those constant speeds, especially uphills.
55mph and above, I do flip to 5th though.

Normally if I'm cruising around town at 40 mph or above I tend to be in top gear.
One of my Valkyries runs so smoothly that I regularly catch myself running in fourth gear when I should be in the top.

Whatever it is, it's better in the wind.
On a road less traveled.
