Is it a huge project to remove my Interstate fairing and convert to headlight and small windshield setup?  I will also need to get directionals and gauges I believe.

It can be done, but you’ll lose radio, odometer will be incorrect, lose fuel gauge. I just used a Harley short, smoked, curved shield and redrilled hole to match. Makes fairing look better and lower. In my opinion, leave it and add a tourer or standard to your collection.

Unless you really enjoy challenges, best to sell the Interstate and buy the Tourer (or Standard made into a Tourer).

As others posted above, it can be done. The right way (at a minimum) is to swap the I/S wiring harness for that of a Standard/Tourer, and you'll need a new triple clamp assembly (or mod yours for the gauge mount brackets). Then you'll need to source a pair of gauges and a headlight assembly plus mount, front turn signal mounts and a few other odds and ends.

Or you can add a Standard/Tourer to you collection, as Jess pointed out.

Allow me to $pend your money. Here's a road map of what I did with my last two Valkyries:

  • Find a Cee Bailey's chopped-down I/S windshield or make your own
  • Remove the I/S trunk. Optional: Mod fender rails for quick attach/detach.
  • Add Standard/Tourer taillight to I/S fender in the provided spot.
  • Obtain Tourer of same color scheme (can't go wrong with black).
  • Swap Tourer fender rails and shocks for I/S equivalents and install trunk.
  • Find an I/S tank and swap the Standard/Tourer one for it. Optional: Fit fuel gauge.
  • Optional: Find a set of I/S radiator pods, radiator and engine guards. Swap Standard/Tourer parts for these.
  • If you're in love with the Tourer windshield (assuming that model), keep it. Otherwise, remove and mount a National Cycle light bar, swapping the large turn signals for something closer to our OEMs. Next, Install brackets for a Memphis Shades Batwing and mount Batwing. If you want the option of also running a clear shield, search this forum for posts from me detailing the modification of Victory Vegas Trigger-Lock plates for use with Fats-style shields.
  • Make your own "Bag Drop Kit" (RIP Chet...) and install on both bikes.
  • Optional: Acquire an additional Standard and do same w/ BDK, windshield mounts. Leave a sissy bar on this one.

I've done everything listed above except for the last step and am searching for the right '03 Standard to round things out. The front end will be a little different in that I'm going to use a Road King light bar so the H-D configuration Batwing, windshields, Quadzilla or whatever other fairing I want to run will mount and dismount like the R-K parts do. It'll be a swap meet cruiser for me and the Missus which also can be pressed into day-tripper service as a backup to the I/S and Tourer.

All of my Valkyries have a full complement of 2-way radio gear and instrumentation. I'll probably go Spartan with the Standard, though the Hondaline CB is a nice thing to have at times.

Have not been on the site in a long time, but I modded my stock IS fairing to make it a bit more svelte. This allowed me to keet the IS gauges.  Wind protection is still pretty good, although your hands get wetter if it is raining hard...  Roll Eyes  Since this pic I have added Clearwater "sun-brite" (my name, they are awesome)  LED's where the stock turns are, and added surface mount 4" led strips on each side just under the windshield.
oops. Forgot I cannot copy/paste a photo on this site, and I do not keep a photos server account.
PM me if you would like a pic. Or search for my older posts; pretty sure I posted something several years ago.

I’ve just been hunting parts on PinWall cycles,  they have a lot of standard and tourer parts / wiring harness etc

Good luck,

I’ve contemplated it,, but id buys a tour model before i did that !!
