I'm replacing the ball bearings in the steering head of my VTX 1300 with roller bearings. It was a known weakness in the 1300. Anyway I pulled out my Valkyrie manual to use as a good reference for roller bearing setup and it called for 12 ft lbs, 3 ft lbs lower than the VTX. Looking at the parts diagram for the Valk Honda shows a tapered roller bearing in the bottom and a ball bearing up top. Is that correct or am I misreading the diagram?

My manual states ..... 12 ft-lbs Standard/Tourer. However, you have to pretighten the adjustment nut to 30 ft lbs, then loosen, then retighten to specs. Of course, swing the handlebars lock-to-lock several times before loosening the pre-torqued nut. My VT600 adjustment nut spec is 18 ft lbs.
While we're on the subject, has anybody changed out the Valk's top steering head bearing to a tapered bearing?

So I was wondering too why the ball bearings up top. One of the guys on the VTX website sent me the VTX 1800 procedure. It was definitely rollers top and bottom. It's funny Honda manufactured all three 700 lbs class cruisers at the same time. The lightest cheapest one had balls top and bottom, the valk only had balls up top, and the 1800 had rollers top and bottom. Anyway I don't see any see any systemic issues with the Valkyries. If you search on VTX 1300 steering bearings you get an endless list of threads. I never rode an 1800 but it seems the Valk was by far the best handling of the 3. Maybe the balls up top give it those floppy handle bars that work real well allowing the fat lady with the fat front tire to drop in a little like a sports bike. I would always lean toward tappers up and down, but on the other hand the Valk seems to work.

Valk uses taper roller bearings to top and bottom. Check parts list, I use generic bearings from bearing suppliers.

The races aren't included or at least they're not in the pictures. What good are taper bearings without new races.

I've installed thousands of tapered roller bearings. I've never had one come without new races. Usually I installed the new race too.

Tapered bearings must be rolled to seat them. They need to crawl on the angle. If torqued , and not moved, they will seat and be loose the first time they are moved.

Look up the picture of the part number for upper and lower bearings and you will see the race comes with the bearing

I do nut see it ..... lower bearing, upper bearing. Probably a typo by the draftsman.

It looks like the designer showed them without the outer races to show that they are roller bearings and maybe the outer race is picked as a kit under the part list. I've never seen it drawn without outer races before. Typically the outer race would be shown separate from the inner race and bearing as it would be assembled.
