On Monday I installed the new door gasket on my 20 year old Kitchenaid... it leaked
worse when I got done.

On Tuesday I de-installed the old kitchenaid and bought a new one.

On Wednesday I got the new one in the house and the old one out and some
installation started.

On Thursday I got it all done, installed, plumb, level all that stuff...

Today I plugged it in and a cycle is running. Water is not yet spraying all
over the house, or under the sink, or anywhere it is not supposed to, as far
as I can tell...

Well done Mike.   cooldude

I do a lot of home improvement myself, where it's 70/30 it will work out OK or it will make things worse.

I often have some (but not all) of the necessary skills, and some (but not all) of the necessary tools I need to do the job.

I tend to do all the work I am good at right away, and leave all the work I'm not so good at for later; which is fine for a while, except eventually all the work remaining is challenging, or irritating, or distasteful, or confusing, or worst of all.... down on my hands and knees (which I hate).     Grin Angry

One of the first things I did when I moved into my house 32 years ago, was take the (almost new) portable dishwasher out and throw it in a dumpster (because my kitchen is small and I needed the room).  One or two people can hand wash dishes.  Takes me a few minutes.   It's one of those jobs I'm good at.   Smiley

most of the time

I used youtube to fix the fridge, and to replace the panel of buttons on the old
dishwasher ten years ago... and I almost didn't use the printed manual to install
the new dishwasher, Kitchenaid has a man clearly going through each step on
youtube...

The new dishwasher has a terminal box instead of using wire nuts to hook on
the power cord. So I even got to solder some ring terminals onto my power
cord...

I’ve used an online company several times for parts as well as their tutorial videos and they’ve helped quite often.

I believe that's where I got my door seal kit for my attempted fix of the
old dishwasher...

:crazy2:Maybe Le: a good crumpet is your friend here:”   crimper not crumpet friend (solder has a lot of chemical reactions plus the different metals’ in the terminals can create an open condition over time. Crimps are much preferred in this case because of 2 metal electrodes reacting. Glad got her fixed.

Bosch dishwasher . They are reasonable , the last time I bought one. I suggest , do not let a salesperson talk you into a unit with a thousand programs. We buy one model above basic at most. After a while , only a couple functions are used.  Same with a washer and drier.

Imho, just like many tried and true USA appliance manufacturers, Kitchenaid has gone down in quality.

My mom had a kitchenaid dishwasher purchased around 1952 and was still running great when she sold in 1970.  That was with a family of 10.

When I built my house in 1990, I installed a Kitchenaid dishwasher based on that experience.

It made it till 2006, with most of its life handling 1 person. I would have to turn up the tv when it was running because of the noise it made, not to mention it didn't clean very well.

Replaced with a Bosch.  cooldude

I guess I didn't learn the lesson, as I bought a Kitchenaid s.s. Gas grill figuring it would last awhile.

Wrong, made it about 4 years before all the burners and interior supports crapped out.

The carcass is still good, it's stainless, but the guts were cheap and although I did replace once, they lasted even less.

Replaced with a Napoleon.

The new dishwasher is almost silent. The dishes are fairly
dry when it is done. I have no doubt it is very different
from one made in 1952  Smiley ... nobody was whipping them
to be green then. I'm sure all kinds of green energy
water saving stuff is built into new ones it is a wonder
they work at all to clean dishes...

Absolutely, just like clothes washers.

Seems like some people need to wash the cloths twice with the new water and energy saving machines.

My brand new washer does just fine on one wash per load.

But holy mackerel it doesn't sound anything like my other washers did.  It gurgles and farts and putts along, and takes extra long long to fill, and a lock prevents the top door from opening (so I don't lose an arm reaching in  crazy2)

I do tend to choose "deep water wash" and not "auto sensing" for most all loads.

And I'm a guy, so I tend to wash almost everything together; although my crummiest work clothes get done alone.
