Sex in space has been posing a problem for decades, but an experiment on the International Space Station could soon pave the way for astronauts to join the 100-Mile High Club.

The issue is not, as you might expect, a mechanical one – although since no one has tried to make space love, we do not quite know how it might work out.

The primary concern with amorous orbiting couples is the conception of a child, and what effects microgravity and radiation might have on either the mother or baby.

However, a breakthrough experiment on the International Space Station has shown normal development of mouse embryos while in orbit, suggesting human embryos may also be able to develop under the same conditions.
And while the subject of sex in space is always an entertaining one, it is also serious business if humans want to become an interplanetary species.

‘There is a possibility of pregnancy during a future trip to Mars because it will take more than six months to travel there,’ said Dr Teruhiko Wakayama at the University of Yamanashi in Japan, who led the study. ‘We are conducting research to ensure we will be able to safely have children if that time comes.’

While this is always a possibility, I find it somewhat humorous.  I wonder how much money is being spent on this.   Although admittedly, it wouldn't be if such a situation did happen.  Will we also send embryos to Mars to determine development there when our folks eventually arrive and do the dirty?  Saw that movie a while back.    Although I'm thinking with the selection process already in place, they could get past this pretty easily.

Human beings, being the "animals" we are, this situation WILL come up someday. Up in the ISS - not so big a problem, Send the pregnant crew member back to earth on the next crew exchange. I suppose having a baby on the ISS could provide insights on what to expect for a longer time.

On a trip  to / from Mars or even farther - I'd be surprised if we DON'T have this happen. I would hope that the mission planners are taking this into account.

I've always thought having a baby in space, then raising it in artificially inflated gravity, say 1.5x Earth would be interesting; see if we've made a quasi super-man when we bring them back down to Earth gravity after they've grown up in and theoretically adjusted to living in higher gravity...

For some, ever experimented in water before?? You can practice before you go into space. You know what  they say, practice makes perfect.  I must admit it may be worth the ride, and definitely wouldn't mind viewing the earth from space when in a stellar position.
