Hey guys, just picked up my first Valk, been looking for a black Interstate for awhile and one popped up near me, a one owner all stock 52,000 miles for $3500 so I road her home. Already did the Oil, Plugs, and Coolant, going to be doing the final drive, clutch and brake fluids in the coming weeks. Probably going to change to a Honda non vacuum petcock and rebuild the carbs over the winter. Also going to replace the front and rear suspension. The trunk lid also needs a repaint, how well does gloss black rattle can match the OEM paint? Anyone in the Boston area have a Cobra exhaust they'd like to part with?

Welcome to the club.  cooldude Not sure about the paint match, but you could post a message on the Tech forum. I'm sure there's someone out there that could answer your question. I've got a lot of good advice for my own Valk using the forum.   Smiley

Howdy Joe333x and welcome to the VRCC!

You might try these guys for matching paint → https://www.colorrite.com

I've heard good things about 'em...

Kidding ya, great bunch of people here but just a fraction of what it use to be.

Welcome to the best machine based web site there is. (IMHO)

She looks great and you got a good deal.

If she runs right, why you planning on ripping into the carbs?

She runs okay, will stall out until allowed to warm up for 15min or so. The carbs and petcock havent been touched in 23 years. I already know the petcock is seeping so Im sure the O-rings in the carbs are not much better. I want to keep this bike a real long time and carbs definitely need a rebuild after 23 years.

You should fix that right away. First.

You can rebuild the OEM one, get a new OEM one or get
a different one...

Are you using the Enrichner correctly?  None of mine will run right after start without some enrichment. The goal is to use as much as needed to keep the rpm's just under 2 k.

I have 4 Valks and 2 are 98's.  Outside of changing out jets, nothing has been done to the carbs and I'd get on any and ride to the pacific or Gulf of Mexico (well, except the bobber, she stays close to home)

A lot depends on how she was treated and stored by previous owners.

I get the "piece of mind" thing, but I'm a mostly "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" guy.

Good luck with your new love.

Agreed.

I had my Valk for 18 years. It had a little over 100K miles on it when I sold it. I didn't replace the OEM petcock. But I always turned it off when the bike was stopped, even if it was it was a short stop for lunch while on a ride. I'd seen others who had engine hydro-lock from the seeping OEM petcock. I didn't want to experience that and potentially ruin an engine.

It would be bad to get a hydrolock.

Daniel Meyer says it really sucks to be on fire, though!

:cooldude:Hello, nice find.If you go onto to the main valkyrie site and research shutoff from other models you can find one that allows you to keep it functioning the same as the original.I wish I had found it before I changed to the pingle shutoff. The pingle can be a pain in the ass to to reach, you will have to reach under the tank.Good luck with the new to you Valkyrie

The 'reserve' with my Pingel petcock was considerably less that what the stock was....
