I have a 98 standard 55K and 2003 cd 25K. I get only 24 mpg on the 98 and 33 on the 03.
The 98 runs good until I jump on the throttle the engine runs rough until I back off and its fine.
Not sure if this means anything but the 98 starts easier then the 03. Never need to choke it no matter how cold it gets here in NH. The 03 takes a couple tries before it starts but other than that it runs great

Valkyries are that way - different... I go on reserve around 115... lots of people don't
go on reserve until 150 or more...

I'm just guessing but if you 98 requires no choke and gets worse mpg my first thought would be that its running rich.

A friend of mine had a tune up done by the local honda stealer a couple days before a 2500 mile trip.  They opened the pilots up so far that it was running terribly rich.  No idea why they would even touch them.  Smelled like fuel out the tail pipes.
Fuel mileage was down like yours.  2 1/8 - 2 1/4 turns open and you'll see a difference.

I think you are at the east coast by the time line. There is someone near you with a digi-sync.  A basic adjustment and check for vacuum leaks. Start from basics and do not assume.
I average 38 to 42.  On occasion the twisty thing causes some fuel issues. I like to ride fast and sometimes get there fast.

Or, maybe, make sure the enrichment valves are actually closed when the 'choke' lever is fully up at the grip. Easy to check - take the chrome covers off the enrichment valve slides, and check that the little brass valve controls, which look like large rivet heads, are fully seated, and that the slides are lubricated and slide easily. Also, the cable that connects one side to the other has to be adjusted so that all six move, and close, at the same time.

So my 98 is the same way as far as not ever needing the enricher. Starts every time, of course it doesn't get very cold here in Texas. When I first got it I was getting about 31. I probably wasn't getting into 5th until about 55mph or 2500 rpms. If I'm not in a rush now I'm in 5th by 35mph maybe 1500rpms. That seems to taken my mileage to the 35 to 37 mpg range. If my mileage drops since I've been doing the early shifting, it always seems the enricher that I never use has come off tight shut.

The 1st. and last time mine got 25 mpg. is when I 1st. got it and it ran not so Valk like. Fresk tank of non ethanol and a 1/2 can of Seafoam and 2.5mi. later the dragon awoke. That was almost 11 yrs. ago. 35 mpg. norm but my wrist creates 32 mpg. on a occasion. I fill up every 140 mi. w/o reserve being used.

Howdy Ltlfeat!

While riding home from an InZane years ago my '98 Standard started having symptoms similar to what you describe with your '98 Standard.  Once home I started going though everything I could think of, but the issue persisted until I replaced the Cover Set.

Assuming that you have the stock fuel delivery system in place, maybe start by checking the vacuum line off the #6 intake manifold for cracks or leaks.  That could keep a perfectly good Cover Set from working properly.

FYI, my '98 Standard gets around 32 mpg on average.  Of course, that's going downhill with a tailwind!   Wink

Joe is on the right track. My OEM service manual says to set the pilot screws at 1 3/4 turns out. Calif models at 2 turns out. I set my 97 non CA, at 2 turns out and get 33-34 mpg consistently.
