Don’t Let the Old Man In

I heard this the other night and for some reason, it was just a song.  Probably because I was not listening very well and did not recognize the singer.

Tonight, it was more than a song.  It's about me.  It could be about you.   It might be about a lot of us.

What inspired Toby Keith to write 'Don't Let the Old Man In'? (from the second link below):

The song was inspired by a conversation Toby Keith had with Clint Eastwood in May 2017. The two shared a golf cart at Eastwood’s golf tournament in California, and the Oscar-winning director mentioned he was leaving the next day for three-month shoot to make a movie called The Mule. "How do you do it, man?" Keith asked.

"I just don’t let the old man in,” Eastwood responded. From there, Keith got to writing.

And Eastwood’s answer is spot on.

What's the meaning of Toby Keith's 'Don't Let the Old Man In’?  (Again from the second link below)

At its core 'Don't Let the Old Man In" is a song about how time comes for all of us, but we can't let it get to us. It's another way of saying we should live life to the fullest while we're here.

Some of the lyrics from the song linked below:

Don't let the old man in

I wanna leave this alone

Can't leave it up to him

He's knocking on my door

The way I understood it was Clint inspired Toby and Toby wrote the song and asked Clint if he could publish it and Clint gave him permission to publish if he could use the song in his movie "The Mule."

As we get older our bodies do complain much louder about the things that we have and continue to put them through.

All that we can do is just keep putting one foot in front of the other for as long as we can.

I admire those that are still doing the things of their youth even though their bodies are no longer young.

When I think of those that are still out there "doing" things our friend DDT is the first that comes to mind.

I've told him many times that I want to be just like him when I grow up and I sincerely meant it each and every time.

When I am finally able to retire, I hope that my body will still let me follow the desires of my heart.

Exploring this great country from the seat of a motorcycle has been a dream since the day I learned to ride.

Good Lord willing, I'll find myself doing just that someday.

Jim,

Thanks for posting this! At this stage of life, I find myself wondering about the obvious end coming faster each day, it seems. I struggle to balance keeping dream fulfillment alive with knowing when to say when. I go through all the iterations of where is the meaning of life, what is its purpose, and how have I done with the blessings I've been given... and how many of those have I let slip through my fingers.

I've also had a glimmer of an idea already about how my own attitude and thoughts about it all do play a significant role in both the quality of my own life along with its quantity. I hadn't put all of that together quite yet, but this song and its story do add tremendous depth and introduce new opportunities to squeeze out even more from this dwindling life-support system for an ordinary mortal. I feel a big lift from this, and I know I will keep on keeping on for longer than I'd thought possible even a few minutes ago...

I'm simply not ready for a rocking chair, and now I realize I can delay that day some just by my own thinking and self-talk... This is for this rider a watershed moment... Thanks again for bringing it to me!

I had fantastic health (speed and endurance) (and few illnesses or injuries) all my life.  I never had to work at it.  Never went to doctors much either.

The last couple years I had a couple health scares.  They thought I had prostate cancer (killed my dad), and then a spot on my lung was maybe lung cancer (smoked the evil tobacco 40 years).  A bunch of doctors, MRI, CT scans later, I had none of that.

My mom at 93 has a very good handle on old age health, so I listened to her, changed my diet significantly (but not radically) and began exercise (walk 2-3 miles daily, and get outside for work every day possible), and quit cigarettes (hardest thing I ever did, though I have backslid to some cigars).  Weight loss was never my goal, but I lost 20-25lbs, gradually (suddenly all my pants and belts were too big).  So I feel better, sleep better, have more energy, and am more alert than for many years.

Besides, being a couch potato is boring.

I have been at my house and property all during this time, and now have fixed, repaired, replaced, cleaned everything up so much, I now have to work at finding things to do.  So yesterday, I pulled out a pile of scrap lumber (only needed 2 new 2X4s) and my circular saw, tape measure, lithium drills, builders square, and belt sander, and built a big bench.  I am only a hack carpenter, but I now have a 6'8" long, 20" high, 16" wide bench with one coat of cedar stain.  2d coat today.  It will sit out in my backyard driveway along the fence and serve as an outdoors work bench.  It's not a thing of beauty, but it's rock solid.  The T-111 seat makes it light enough for me to move around.

Already did my 3 miles this morning.   Smiley

Every man should do what he wants, but old age will screw you up (eventually), and my program is a good one to follow.

I've used that saying for years now. Didn't know about the song.

Jess, some people I know think I'm extreme with my lifestyle.. They may be right. I tell people they don't have to be like me to stay healthy, strong and fit. A simple template like the one you have is a very good one.

The key is to keep the body moving constantly while feeding it food that will rot. Any food that doesn't rot is not food. Fasting also is extremely valuable, it gives your body a chance to do needed repairs well not being burdened with digestive action.

If people get out and walk daily, pick up something heavy-ish and put it over their heads daily, carry something heavy daily, move all of their joints every day, practice balancing on one foot, practice getting up and down off of the floor without using hands, practice something like Tai Chi or dancing or whatever movement patterns you like, work on holding a better posture while standing and walking.. The list goes on and on.
The whole point is to just be consistent, there is no wrong way.. So long as you just keep doing it everyday.
