He certainly is still riding.  He is no longer a member of this board or of some Facebook groups where he disparaged the VRCC.

Can he still be contacted?

I may have an extra computer that I can get working and give to him.

I've been in contact with Dennis, I don't think this is a computer problem, it looks like his IP might be blocked from the forum's webserver at a technical level (That happened to me a few times when I clicked links too fast.)

(A lot of webservers, especially dynamic ones like forums, have active self defense mechanisms where if a specific IP address bangs it too hard it thinks it's under attack and will put a block on that IP address in place.)

I've been working with him try to help him use a free proxy as a kludge to see if that gets him on the forum, and also reached out to F6Gal to see if she can have the VRCC web admin dude check to see if O2S's IP address is explicitly blocked.

Dennis can reach any other website, JUST not the forum, which really sounds like a block at the webserver level. His computer is even able to ping the forum servers, just can't get a good HTTP/HTTPS connection...

Thanks for the information.

Now that is really strange, I know you are trying for a proxy but would a VPN or a browser with its own IP  address, if even temporary be easier? Express VPN is 6.67 per month, install it get his computer connected then cancel it.

Have you just disconnected his whole internet service and then reconnected it. I doubt very seriously he has a dedicated IP on his home and doing that may resolve the issue. The other thing could it be his anti virus, did you shut it off? If he has someone at the place he lives connect to his internet with another computer maybe they can connect to the board.

I only give you this since it has free programs to change IP address so you dont have to go looking.

How to change your IP address safely and easily in 2024
https://www.comparitech.com/blog/vpn-privacy/change-ip-address/

They recommend Nord VPN for 3.39 per month and its money back if not satisfied.

Yes a VPN would work as well, just something to convince the webserver he was coming from a different IP address than the one he's actually coming from, I was just trying it as a kludge/stop gap and troubleshooting measure not a long term fix...

(Another option would be to install the (Free) Opera browser, which includes a built in free VPN.)

Without getting into too many details, there were some peculiarities of his network configuration that led me to believe he might have a static IP address, either by assignment or just in practice. I couldn't easily do an IP release/renew though, since I was using IP to remotely control his computer that would have dropped the connection I was using to control it.

After digging through old notes and PM's of mine I'm about 99% convinced this is a situation where he tripped the server level defenses (Not the forum, deeper level at the server) and got his IP blocked. I did just that trying to automate some offline reading scripts I tried to write back in 2014 and again in 2016. I found the correspondence with Scott in Ok and I was receiving the exact same error message as Dennis is receiving now.

I relayed the info to F6Gal who will try to get it to the current webmaster to see if he can clear the block on Dennis' IP address.

Thank you, I like Dennis and with all the disappearances as of late did not really think to much about it. Till the topic was brought up and learned it was a tech issue, so just wanted to get him back on line.

I'm glad your on it and thanks for the explanations and did not want to intrude on your efforts, just wanted to help and make sure all the bases were covered, which they are.  cooldude

If there is a problem or not able to be resolved in a reasonable time I would be happy to pay for a VPN for a month or maybe even a year for him to be back.

No need to apologize, it's all good and I appreciate the ideas and offers! It was the commentary in this thread that got me looking into it and reaching out to him.

If the current webmaster for the VRCC can't fix the issue then a VPN based solution might be the answer, just hate to see a Band-Aid used as a permanent fix when the actual fix is (Almost definitely) known, just needs to be implemented.

(Or try to get Dennis to ask his ISP to assign him a new IP address if a release/renew doesn't work, but that's also just a Band-Aid workaround.)

Woot, glad you're at least semi-back, hopefully we can get ya' fixed for real quickly... if not can explore a better long term work around like Opera or a paid VPN but hopefully not needed long term...

Cancelled! Maybe Elon will buy this forum and invite Britman back. Then someone could write an exposé and call it The VRCC Files.
