At the end of the day when I pulled in the driveway I could hear the music over the car running, suddenly I'd see a head pop up over the window sill of the big picture window followed by a flurry of bodies in the living room. When I walked in all was quiet and everyone was either reading, doing homework, or napping. The radio was either off or turned way down to the local jazz station. I'd just smile and go about my business, but catching all the side glances they all shot at each other. Years later, even as middle-aged adults, they didn't...or wouldn't believe I was fully aware of what was going on. Better them doing that than out on the streets somewhere getting into trouble which many of their peers were doing. I always thought I fell short in being a dad, much less a father. Looking back...maybe not.
