An Intriguing Corollary... I know, it might appear to some like I'm engaged in 'antics with semantics' here, and that I'm digging deeply into the barrel of excuses to justify... Mia culpa! Due largely, though, to the forecast of a couple of day's dip in temps coming along with a remote possibility of a shower or two, I've chosen to lay over a couple of days right here in Greenville, NC... Yeah, yeah, excuses aside, I do grant myself a waiver fairly often to allow for catching up on naps, laundry, and such without risking allowing the old man in... That, and this is a nice set-up for exactly such... BTW, breakfast worked out as billed next door, and it appeared I'd get to verify/confirm my findings the following morning, as well... This interlude also provided a terrific opportunity for ponderation and reflection. Now that's a pretty darned good justification right there, don't you think? Yep, time to give my thinker muscle a vigorous workout for sure... No sensible reason I know of to limit exercise exclusively to all the other muscle groups, right? We'd ride again soon enough anyway; only environmental conditions should be slightly improved over what they otherwise would have been. I chose to think of it as simply a timely coincidence... and not a wimperization at all... During all of this, an intriguing notion popped into the conscious zone of my consideration mechanism. Not a riddle at all, but it does require a bit of circular thinking, so bear with me on this, please... Truly, I will try not to turn this into a lengthy tome! A great deal of thought lately has gone into the concept of not letting the old man in. Amazing prospect that, and one about which I'd been nibbling around the edges a lot in recent times. The timing of the recent post with a link to the song and story behind it, interestingly, came at a most opportune time for this ponderer, and it sort of brought all the loose ends of my thoughts together! "As one's thinking is, such one becomes..." A realization brought to my attention nearly half a century before. As I'd continued thinking about getting older and what I should be doing about that reality, not allowing myself to 'think' myself into becoming old and therefore actually prematurely becoming an old man made a lot of sense. 'Don't let the old man in...' Then an alternative way of thinking about the same thing occurred to me; 'Don't let the little boy out!' I've said many times that I'm actually a boy trapped inside an aging, decaying cellulose vessel. Not letting the old man in, to this boy anyway, also means not evicting the 'boy' inside to accommodate the old man. Same theme here, simply diverse ways of looking at it. The point is that to the extent we can influence our feelings and actions with our deliberate, focused thinking, we should use that opportunity to maximum positive benefit. It seems desirable to pursue a youthful, playful, optimistic, and joyous perspective on events in our lives, and to maintain a lifestyle to the extent possible that reflects that thrilling, uplifting view. Are the two points of view companion ideas, or is one an extension of the other? Whichever it is, from here on I'll be diligently keeping the little boy inside so not to even allow room to let the old man in! You could say a 'two birds with one stone' kind of thing, I suppose... Those last couple paragraphs there say plenty. Been awhile since I've let the young feller inside run wild and free. Those are the best of times.
Admittedly those times have been fewer and further between over the past few years.
I have some plans to take that bull by the horns and throw my fate to the wind again soon here. Seasons are changing again, like they always do...
You are both an old sage and a wide-eyed kid. It's an admirable combination.

My little boy is very much alive and well, just ask my wife. On the other side, the old man is beating and banging on this bag of bones. After spend Saturday, Monday, and Tuesday on my knees setting floor tile and a shower floor, I could barely move and afraid to set down for fear of not being able to get back up! Then came Wednesday, more work to do but the tile is set, the sun is shining, the wife is going out on a shopping trip and I am going for a RIDE. At 1:35 in the afternoon it will be short and sweet but I have to let the little boy have some fun!

Seth,
Thanks, my friend! I know I've been on variations of this theme for a couple of posts, but it's become a new toy for me, and I'm enjoying the Dicken's out of it! When I was focusing on getting older and anticipating things to go downhill... they would! Conversely, lately I've thought about "Hey, I can still do this!" I do them better than only a few months ago! Our subconscious minds and the impact they can have on our lives is... Well, a newly discovered toy!

John,
In spite of all the positive aspects of thinking myself 'not so old' lately, there are still physical implications with which I've had to come to terms! Like with you, knees are definitely one of those... You've always struck me as a pretty savvy dude, so I know you know what I've been talking about and how I've been reveling in new-found vim-vigor-vitality. Good luck with all the chores you've undertaken and still have in front of you. I think I'll just keep on riding instead, though...

I'm well on my way to possibly letting the little boy have complete control. I still have several trips planned so far this year. Arkansas in April, Alaska again in June, upper midwest and New England in July, and about anything else I feel like doing. Not necessarily coddiewonples since there is a destination for most of these. But there are some shorter meanderings that are gonna transpire.

Eric,
Sounds like your 'ride card' is nearly maxed out!!! WOW! I suppose you have no idea how many folks envy the heck out of you, do you!? You do lead a full life filled with excitement and frolicking, so... You just go right ahead and let that 'little boy' lead you hither and yon to your heart's content!
I'm still plodding along wandering around... thinking I may give AZ another try this season... I'm headed that way now, but the jury is still out as to whether or not I'll actually make it. Beyond that, I don't have any plans... but what's new about that, right? My 'little boy' is enjoying the limelight, too!

Maybe if I'd included some reference to momma, prison, pick-ups, or guns... we'd already have one! Alas! DDT (12)

DDT (12) Here are the verses to our song....now we just need some music to go with them....if anybody wants to add a verse or two...I havent copywrited it yet..... Dont let the little boy out.... The old man will move in there is no doubt.... As the little boy skips away... The old man moves in and stops to say.... Get ready ole boy... Your life changes today.... Your riding days are over... No more morning rides in the country clover.... Dust the wheel chair off... Listen to me and do not scoff.... This can really come about..... If you let the little boy out...

Little Boy!
Dang, my friend, that is truly great! You have a serious talent there, and... Maybe you need to cut a demo and send it to Nashville... You could just be the next 'Toby'... My admiration aside, it really is spot on, and I thank you for coming up with that and sharing your creative ditty. It is truly amazing to realize the inherent truth, even more astonishing to actually 'live' all of that... I'm looking forward to the next time we can share some stories and yuks while grinning together in bold defiance of that boogieman, 'the old man'.

No worries about having lots of money to dispose of! You'd become wildly popular all of a sudden, with friends and family you never knew before, plus so many charities and investment opportunities all looking to lighten your load... Heck, we probably have a few on here who'd take some just to help ya out, too... I mean, besides me!
