At a family gathering today with my two grown sons and their families the subject came up about being "grounded" as the two sons were growing up.   My wife laughed and said that being grounded at our house wasnt like prison where you just have to go to your room for a while...at our house if you got grounded due to bad grades or getting into trouble you were given work assignments around the house.
Thats when she got the house windows cleaned....got the flower beds rejuvinated...got the cars washed...etc.   She said now she has to do all these chores herself.....that she misses getting all these chores done while the boys were grounded.    One of my sons spoke up and said "Mom.....all you got to do is hide Dads Valkyrie keys." ........I said " WAIT A MINUTE....THATS NOT FUNNY!!....you can go home now....."

I was never grounded.

I got spankings young.  Later, my maximum allowance (for work, including keeping my room clean) of 50 cents a week was suspended, and I was given extra chores/duties.

Dad did once tell me.... If you disrespect your mother like that again, I'm gonna let you have it.   I didn't do it again, and he never let me have it.  The threat was enough.

I was always quick, but until 8th grade or so, dad was quicker.  I would run, but he would grab me by the back of my belt and lift me off the ground (still pumping away).

I loved my parents, and their skills at shaming me (for bad behavior) worked better than violence.

One time, when the boys were little, they had done something wrong - I don't even remember what it was, but my wife had them upstairs in their room sitting on the bed and she was explaining to them what they did wrong, and why it was wrong and how it makes other people feel, etc. and she was going on and on and on.  They were both sniffling and looking down and finally the little one says, can dad just spank us.

That's when we knew that the lecture was the better punishment.

A related story I probably told on here years ago.

We moved around a lot for dad to finish college (engineering, after the Corps), and then for his jobs.  I think I lived in some 17 places before 1st grade.  So I was always the new kid on the block, and got picked on plenty.  Dad the Marine (and ex golden gloves boxer) taught me some basic self defense.  When I complained there were almost always 3-4 against me, he said I needed to fight a group with a stick/rod/pole, and gave me some instruction on that too.

Some days later, they came by and started on me again, and I took a broom handle to them, with full swings to the face, and they all ran off.  That evening, their dad's showed up complaining I had hurt their boys.  Dad said, your boys are bullies and they've been ganging up on my younger son all summer and he was just defending himself the best he can.  So these dads start to get aggressive with my dad (I'm watching and listening out our window).

Dad's not a large guy, 5'9" but he's got a 44" chest and a 29" waist with not one ounce of fat on him and he excelled in golden gloves and the Corps.  So he tells them..... OK, if you guys want satisfaction from me, I'll give it to you, and I'll fight you one at a time or all at the same time it doesn't matter to me, but I'm telling you right now, I'm going to hurt all of you.  And these guys looked at each other, and decided to leave.  No son was never prouder of his dad than me.
