Hey folks
My 97 Valk has cylinders 1 and 5 with compression issues, likely rings. I found and bought a 98 engine for cheap, reportedly ran fine before being removed. Dont know 98's mileage.  I have barely been able to ride my 97 for 2 years now chasing popping exchaust, clogged jets, carburation/idle issues, compression, desmogging, etc.

I plan on desmogging the "new" engine. I have backup exhaust gaskets, just recently replaced intake runner o-rings, have new parts on the engine-to-be-replaced that I can swap to the 98 engine including water pipe o rings, desmog plugs, and the like.

Are there any other specifics you would recommend looking at for replacing an engine on a Valkyrie

I put a 97 engine in a 98 a few years ago without any problems. To my untrained eye everything seems the same and interchangeable. Do not forget to put the plastic carb air deflector in place when you have the room or you will not be happy!

Personally I would keep the original engine and try to fix compression issues (if feasible).
If you do swap engines, I would also swap out the cams.

I agree. My memory says all ‘98 models have California cams and carbs. If your carb bank from the ‘97 is good I would say swap cams (or heads) and carbs. Then you would retain the power of the ‘97.

I did try AutoRX in the past to no avail, didn't try TCW3 though.

Certainly hoping to keep the 97 heads on if I can and may try to look at the pistons...next winter

most 49 state '97s have the R1 non-emissions cams. I've found a few 49 state '97s that have the R2 emissions cams as do all '98s.  All carbs all yrs and models are the same, except models and yrs with the charcoal canister have additional vacuum hose port connections for the canister.

Oh that frigging piece! I took that out instead of the engine mount to get the carbs out last time...what a hell of a piece to put back with the carbs back in already! Mistake absolutely noted!
