60 miles West of Chicago!

So yesterday it pretty muched snowed all day and night with all the resulting havoc you would expect ... cars spinning out, getting stuck, banging off one another, etc. etc. etc..  Well just to make it interesting, this morning around 4:00am Northern Illinois was hit with a 3.8 earthquake.  Shocked Now I know that our friends in California are saying ... 3.8 what's that? But here anything over 0 can be very disturbing.

The news reports are saying no damage and no injuries.  We are about 60 miles from where it occured and it shook our house.

Glad you're okay in Il. NC had a smaller earthquake several years ago and we're still talking about it. Most people didn't even know ours happened until the news told us the next morning, but we're still talking about it like we all felt it.

Those are odd in states where you're not used to them.

It's not widely known, but Illinois is actually a pretty active earthquake zone.  We design for higher seismic loads in that area...almost as high as California.

I think the epicenter is somewhere in MO. I remember in 1990 we were 'suppose' to have a quake and it never happened. I forget the name of the fault line there.

Does the earth shiver like me when it's cold? That could explain it.

Here's a list of the activity over the past year.

And hope it isn't a precursor to something worse.

It was a couple of years ago, but in Oklahoma there were these sand spouts.  Does anyone remember those?  What were they all about?

You're right Fudgie.  It's the New Madrid Fault in Missouri .  Supposed to be the second highest active fault next to California. I wonder if it extends to the northern Illinois area.

The news here said it wasn't that fault.  There are two smaller ones west of Chicago and the epicenter was somewhere between them.

When I was 13 we lived in Creve Couer, MO (suburb of St. Louis). I was sittin on the throne one night when a 3.6 quake hit somewhere close enough that I felt a very small swaying motion.

Somewhere out West, Which way did I go?

« Reply #16 on: February 11, 2010, 09:04:27 AM »

I was living in Anchorage, AK in the early '90s.  I had a condo in the downtown area and was out on my deck, doing some cleaning.  When I finisihed, I walked inside and pulled the sliding glass door shut (behind me).  The timing couldn't've been better, JUST as the door touched the frame, a SHARP earthquake hit with two VERY LOUD and VERY QUICK impacts to the building (a three story, 27 unit structure) that felt/sounded like two semis colliding against the building.  The first thing that came to mind was "what the hell have I just done?!?!? I didn't slam the door ?!?!"... then, it dawned on me what had really happened.

One of the creepier ones I remember was here in Seattle, about 10yrs. ago.  It was a similar magnitude quake as yours, it was more of a "roller" sensation for me (where I was). I could feel the ground rising and settling, like a wave would on the water.  I was at a restaurant which belongs to some of my family members.  As soon as it hit, I immediately thought of the communications tower just across the street.  I went outside to see what it was looking like it was about to give way.  It was swaying pretty good, but appeared to be holding together.  When I got home, one thing had fallen off a shelf to the carpet, and the only breakage I had was a thin/glass globe for a candle lamp which fell off its base and broke when it hit the table.  The odd part was that throughout Seattle's many neighborhoods... one house would have a crumbled chimney, the rest on the block would be fine.

We had a factory explosion one night while I was working. My uncle felt it and rattled his windows. He lives 1/2 hour away by car.  Shocked
