I have a new to me 98 Std....been doing some maintenance..just finished rebuilding the front brakes and this morning put new plugs in...I thought I would start it up...sat on the bike, kick stand up but not aggressively, key on, push the button, nothing....few times, nothing....the kill button was in the right position but I flipped it back and forth ....nothing....then I put the kickstand down and with an aggressive move raised it and the bike started right up....25 more times no issue...my question is if the kickstand safety is not working right is the bike dead?....is there some maintenance I can do to the kickstand switch?...I did see it attached to the kickstand with one bolt...I could disconnect it on the other end by the battery and make sure the contacts are clean...I did spray some electrical contact cleaner in the ignition switch the other day ...maybe the ignition switch didn't like that soaking.....new, correct battery fully charged....I am aware of the start button, kill switch and ignition switch issues....should I remove the bolt at the kickstand and clean this part? not so sure what I will find in there......thanks. I did just put a new battery in....maybe it had to reset before it engaged things....I did not have a start issue before...

There are three interlock switches. Kickstand, transmission and clutch. If all are working correctly you can  start:
In neutral kickstand down or up no clutch

In gear with the kickstand up and clutch pulled

But not in gear kickstand down even with the clutch pulled

It sounds like your bike is working fine

You didn't mention if it was in gear - was the neutral light on? Kickstand light on?
As noted, if in neutral, the kickstand shouldn't matter, but in gear it has to be up and the clutch pulled.

To me it sounds more like the starter button. Research starter button maintenance

Watch for flying parts, if you open the switch!
