I am draining the crankcase breather tube (the orange drain tube that is capped)at least once a week and a clear watery looking fluid is coming out.  It has a  gas / turpetine  smell.  Is this normal?

Yes it is normal. Sometimes it can even be creamy with stench.
And if you ride in rain or very humid conditions it should be checked often & drained if necessary.

Once a week seems excessive.  I would expect once every few months.

Is there a reason that it can't be left unplugged??

As I recall the tubing circuit runs from the engine into the air box and then condensation runs down to the plug. If the plug isn't there, unfitered air will enter the air box, carbs, etc.

I'm replacing some hoses and want to do this one as well.  Can you use just normal clear tubing or does it have to be something special?  Is the orange color when its new, or just discoloration over time?  Where can I get replacement hose?

I have yet, in over 6 years, to drain any dragon's drool from that tube on my standard. Of course, I seldom ride in the rain. Given that fact, is it normal to never have anything drain from that tube?
