Which Way Should We Go…?

"Go west, young man..." My 'little boy' decided to heed that seductive call recently and led us away from Mitch's place near Crossville, TN, as we sought to meet the setting sun at the horizon. Oh my, what a day it was! Clear sky, tolerable breeze, few bugs that time of year... all that nice stuff, except... Due to the passage of a cold front, it was unseasonably cool, especially up on the Cumberland Plateau.

Out of my usual character, I had started off the ride with my Gerbings liner on but not hooked up, and here’s the real surprise, I was also wearing my chaps! A very good call, it turned out. I'm a big fan of those chaps when it's cold enough for them to be necessary like it was that day; however, ... When I don't need them for warmth, they're in the danged way each time when I mount or dismount our girl and a downright nuisance!

Seat height being what it is, my foot spends a great deal of time nowadays dragging back and forth across ALI's Corbin tush-cush when we're incumbered with leather leggings. The sheepskin, while quite comfy to sit on during rides, acts more like a 'lubricant' for my right foot during get-off and on. Oh well, I'm not whining here, just commenting...

Following the 'all clear' signal from my doctors in Montgomery, we'd scooted up to Mitch's branch of our famous Valkyrie Clinics for our girl’s turn to be checked out. Mitch performed a routine rear end service plus an oil & filter change, and ALI also received an unqualified thumbs-up from her caregiver afterward!

The only not great comment by either of my wellness facilitators was that I'd gained seven pounds since my last visit. A serious admonition right there, as Laura also resides at Mitch's place, and she is a seriously good cook! Oh woe, now I'd have to employ a measure of self-restraint, and that's not one of my strong suits!

We went out for dinner that evening, and I did go for the fried catfish basket rather than the all-you-could-eat option. Her delicious 'gooey butter cake' for breakfast the following morning was the final straw, though, and it made the departure choice a bit easier. I honestly do find self-control a difficult, onerous chore, and I truly don't want to have to purchase a new wardrobe!

We’d been thinking all along we’d head east from there to visit friends and mess around until IZ time… Extended periods of rain expected all around Dixie discouraged me, however, so I studied the patterns westward… Opportunities were present, but timing would still require frequent ‘pauses’ to allow weather to pass over us, and some of the storms in ‘tornado alley’… well, those can be real boogers! We decided to roll the dice and go west anyway…

We'd been into the ride for several hours before the chaps could at last be removed... another hour or so and the liner had to come off also. It never got hot, but we were warm enough towards the end of the ride that the sweatshirt eventually had to be stored as well. Timing issues all worked out well for us; however, ... There was one close call...

We'd glided right past two or three gas stations on the left side of the highway, but I’d been thinking we'd just fuel-up at the first one on the right we came to... We never did come to one of those... at least not in time to avoid running out! Soon we were back out in the farmland zone again… uh-oh! Turn around or gamble…?

We gambled but did finally come to another station also on the left side, and that's when we bit the bullet and stopped! After hitting reserve, we'd slowed down considerably to 'stretch' our fuel, and apparently that had worked well enough to keep us from sitting on the side of the road awaiting help... again...

A good night's sleep and then we were back at it... doing what we do... We arrived in Russellville, AR, for one night... perhaps two. Rain was mentioned in the forecast, and... We don't do rain if we can avoid it. It was raining the next morning, so... It was time to surf the web not the highways.

An interesting Airbnb rental was spotted right there in Russellville that should meet our needs... The weather this time of year is... well... it can be rather volatile, particularly on the plains! Maybe a layover of a week or two might allow things to settle down some...

I do have a borrowed book I need to finish reading, and I wouldn’t mind catching up on some writing either… No gravy-making attempts this time, though, as I’ve reluctantly accepted my fate on that impossible chore… hmmm...

Thanks again, Bruce. I just got back from a three day. 1200 mile meander through the awesome backroads of far eastern Oklahoma. Exactly what I needed to check some gear and things before leaving for Alaska on June 1. Have fun and ride far, my Friend.

Hey buddy.

We will be back in Colorado soon.  Should you make your way that far west and want a place to chill for a few days before heading to InZane, you are welcome at our place.  I bet I can even manage some bacon!

For that matter, you are welcome to join us in riding to Iowa.  I know Josh and I are planning to ride up together.  There are a few others who may join in. I think we are leaving mid day on Friday.   If you think you might be interested, let me know and I’ll keep you abreast of our plans.

If I don’t see you before then, I’ll see you at InZane.  Stay safe my friend.

Eric,

Youdaman! Twelve-hundred miles in three days is no small feat! Of course, I imagine it helped being in some great riding country, but still... Your pace is beyond what I normally do nowadays! Occasionally I'll do something like that, but only when I must. Getting long-in-the-tooth has slowed me down a bunch, but I'm still fighting hard to not let that old man in!!!

I wish you the best on your next trip to Alaska! Awesome ride, to be sure, and one every rider should make, if at all possible. I admire your bold thinking and fearless shattering of limiting paradigms - the 'gold' only goes to the bold! In this case, the 'treasure' is not actually physical gold, but it is priceless nonetheless... I'm looking forward to hearing all about it!

DDT (12)

Don,

Thanks, my friend! I'm looking forward to seeing you and Barbie soon at IZ. I saw Mitch the other day, and he'll have Barb's trike fit as a fiddle as soon as the ordered parts arrive... He even has it up on Jack stands already! Safe travels, and keep that big ol' grin plastered all over your faces...

DDT (12)

Dennis,

Your name came up as Mitch, Laura, and I dined on fried catfish meals the other day! What we three had was even better than what you and I found in Hardy, AR... Of course, I've only had two kinds of fried catfish in my life... good and better!

It's good to read of your riding exploits again! It helps to obliterate the myth that we must abandon riding when our physical condition starts to go downhill. Sure, there is a time when we have no choice, but that time is usually well beyond what our 'comfort indicator' might try to tell us. The testimony of your experience is proof of that, so your continuing reporting is a helpful reminder to the rest of us!  Keep it up!!!

DDT (12)

Janice,

When I think of all the difficult challenges of riding, I usually get around to thinking about you. Most folks would totally dismiss the idea of a slight gal riding a big ol' beast like our Valks, and certainly not one loaded to the max on a cross-country excursion!

Your story is one of determination, patience, and perseverance... Of bold thinking, ambitious goals, and the grit to not only undertake great challenges, but to actually stay the course and see them through. Your cool head and steady pace bolster and support your self-confidence, and your deeds continue to impress the rest of our community! You are remarkable!

I do sincerely appreciate the kind words and the tempting invitation! I have another commitment, however, so I'll be heading back to east Tennessee soon to begin my trek to IZ from there. I do look forward to seeing you and Josh at IZ and to catching up on all the stories and anecdotes of your own adventure through life. See y'all soon!

If in Russellville you should ride up to the top of Mt. Nebo state park.  It's Just South, across the Arkansas River in Dardenelle.  Well worth it if you haven't been up there.  Extremely curvy road up to the top and great views of the river valley.  Just a thought If you get a couple hour window of no rain today.  I'm in Van Buren, Ar.  Just West of Russelville 80 miles.

Peace, Ron.

Ron,

Great advice, thanks! I will be riding up there, only not today... Say, what would you think of a 'picnic' up there this coming Saturday? I've rented an Airbnb here in Russellville for a week starting tomorrow (Wednesday), and I've noticed several BBQ places in town, all with great reviews! I could grab a couple of sandwiches and meet you up there... I'm going to do that anyway, so it would just be a matter of grabbing another sandwich or two while I'm at it... Maybe others would want to join us, as well...

I have no idea if only one week will be the total length of my stay here... but it is highly likely. I typically get the urge to move on soon after hunkering down, but then again, I am in no hurry at all. I just roll with the flow and follow the inspiration... I await your pleasure...

DDT (12)

Dave,

Thanks for the compliment! I haven't forgotten about you, ol' bud, but the forecast did not appear all that inviting or user friendly for riders the next week or so around your parts. I still haven't ruled out showing up before the annual IZ trek, but... you know... If not, however, I'll definitely look you and John up in Dubuque.

DDT,

I'll check my schedule and see if I can make a trip for a meeting at Mt. Nebo this Saturday.  I'll let you know.  If you're here all week.  Just East of you is another cool Mt. peak called Petit Jean state park.  Similar to Mt. Nebo but different.  Also just to the South is Mt. Magazine State Park.  Highest elevation in Arkansas.  These are know as the 3 peaks ride.  Can be done in a day.  Also Hwy 7 from your location is awesome North to Harrison, Ar.  or South to Hot Springs.  Surely in all your travels around our great country you've probably already ridden some of this??  I"ll let you know if I will be able to meet up with you on Saturday.

Peace, Ron.

Bruce, do you have any details on a meeting Saturday? I am slightly less than 500 miles from Russellville. I have another bike that is not currently in the "get it ready for Alaska" mode and could possibly get to there.

Ron,

Yes, I have ridden around this surprisingly interesting state and particularly the Ozark Mtns. over the years beginning in the early 90s. I don't know of all the names of various places, but at one time or another I have seen much of the most scenic parts. Lots of that was long ago, though, so visiting/viewing again would be almost like a first time, so I'm surely game to go at it all again!

I'm thinking noonish at the top of Mt. Nebo for a meet... Pulled pork or brisket sandwich?

DDT (12)

Eric,

Man, it would be great if you could make it! No time or exact location has been set yet, so... I'd be happy to slide either or both of those to accommodate you... Looking forward to this with the hope you can work this out...

DDT,

Noon on the top of Mt. Nebo it is.  I'll be on my 2001 Interstate Black/tan.  They have a visitors center up top.  Meet you there I guess?  Do you wish to continue riding the rest of the day?  We could wander on down to Hot Springs viewing some of the Quachita Mountain scenery since you have done the Ozarks.  Or Could ride over to Mt. Magazine near Paris, AR.  Whatever floats your boat.  Brisket samich sounds real good.  It's about a 2 hour ride for me to the top of Nebo.  See you around noon.  My number is
479-651-3510 if something comes up or changes.

Ron & Eric,

Saturday 5/18/24 Mount Nebo Visitors' Center... tentatively noon. Would 12:30 or even 1pm work better for y'all? I say that because the BBQ place doesn't open until 11am. I'll have to order and wait for the sammiches, then ride to Nebo. Eric is coming from a very long way, and Ron is coming from a pretty good distance himself... Just saying... Eric, brisket sammich OK with you, or would you prefer pulled pork?

Eric, the Airbnb I rented has two bedrooms, so if you'd like to stay over Saturday night... you can stay here.

If anybody else reading this would like to join us, the particulars are spelled out above... No problem with a crowd showing up. I'm thinking of calling this the 'Nebo Nibble' in a story, if I do write one about this...

I'm good with as close to High Noon as possible.  If you guys are up for it, would like to take you on a  little adventure.  Either North or South is great riding.  Nebo is already on the South side of I-40 and Hot Springs is a cool place.  Also remember this is Arkansas.  To the South=cold beer.  To the North=not so much.  Just saying.  Scenery is probably somewhat better in the Northern direction, but both are very nice rides.  Again, your choice.  Watch those first couple of turns going up Nebo.  They're like a 180 reverse uphill, double twist with a backflip.  I'll be up on top waiting for that samich.  I'll have a cooler with some cold water, soda.  Can't wait.  Get to meet another Valk legend.

Peace, Ron.

I heard “Cold Beer” so I looked up Mt. Nebo! Sorry boys, noon is not doable for me at 2400kms away  Grin but,  it certainly looks like a worthy destination. I’ll have a cold one here while I’m working on my old Suzuki and just pretend I’m there while I wait for a few photos of what coulda been.

Bruce, brisket is good with me. I would take you up on the offer for a Saturday night room. I look forward to our visit. I'll probably be on my ST as that's my "far, fast" trip bike. Valk is still an option if I get it packed by tomorrow. I'll go part way tomorrow and be at Nebo about noon Saturday. If you'd like to meet earlier somewhere, just let me know.

Ron,

Appears we have a plan! See ya there... assuming I'm able to successfully negotiate those curves up the hill! I'm really glad you've figured on bringing a cooler and some drinks! I have limited space and no cooler myself, so that will help a bunch!!! I'm open for a minor adventure afterward... I've been to the places you've mentioned except... I don't recall ascending My Petit Jean, so... We can kick around options when we meet. With Eric staying over Saturday night, our choices have been greatly expanded!

DDT (12)

Eric,

Great! Glad we'll have the chance to 'freelance' with our activities... By you staying over, many additional options have opened! I'm looking forward to all the kicking tires then scrapping miles off them to come! Manana, dude!!!

Man, it sure would have been great having you show up too! Alas, I do understand the distance thing, though, so... I'm delighted to learn you'll be celebrating the event right along with us. Heck, we'll even set a place for you and Lynda 'in abstentia' and pretend y'all did make it after all!

I did change my mind and brought the Valk instead. See you tomorrow at the top. I’m in Wilburton, OK tonight. I plan on doing the Talimena Drive ride in the morning if the fog isn’t bad.
