I'm thinking I'd like to keep the Valkyrie motor now in the trike, but still like the idea of adding reverse. Since I have the Wing motor readily available & need to pull the Valk motor anyway, what would be wrong with simply pulling the back off both motors and remove the reverse gears from the Wing motor and installing in the good Valk motor. Seems like that would be the easiest approach overall and would then be able to keep the Valk gearing. The Wing motor isn't the later version with the heavier gears that came in 1997 so I'd be gaining two things; a reverse & a 1999 Valk motor. Thoughts?

If I don't get a response, someone in touch with Mitch please put a bee in his beret.  Grin

It's a 1995 SE or Aspencade. Had to go on Goldwingfacts.com and ask since my Wing shop manual only covered the early 90's models.

some info that might help.

""only the '88-'94 models have the bad 4th and 5th gears, known for wearing out around 100k miles.  '95-'00 have the upgraded 4th and 5th gears.""
""The '97-'00 models were upgraded to the smoother shifting valkyrie gearbox and the stronger clutch""  which is all of the clutch plates are the same material now and the gearbox shafts are slightly larger than pre '97.
most of that is from motorcycle consumer news june '05 GL1500 buyers guide.

Judging from that info it would seem keeping and modifying my current Valk motor would be best. I know the clutch in the GW motor has approx. 24k on it which could be transferred during the process since the back will be exposed anyway. Aside from that I've done other stuff to it during the conversion process.  There's a lot of stuff on the Wing motor that needs to be either removed or changed over to the Valk application and I used new parts in that process. Also new rebuildable tension pulleys and belts, new coolant hoses, new o-rings in the coolant passages on top of the motor...just to name a few. All can easily be transferred to the Valk motor, some items might involve using new o-rings, gaskets, etc.  The trike clutch has always been a bit of an issue, you can't make a quick shift from 1st to 2nd...it will grind a bit unless you make a slow shift. For some reason it's operating better this season, no idea why. I've always heard that things mechanical have a personality of its own, if so then I guess my trike has one that likes to irritate at times.  Wink

sounds like a plan.

one thing I left out and I'm sure u know the GW 4th and 5th are more overdrive than the Valkyrie's 4th and 5th.

Yes, that was/is a consideration but looking at the extra lbs. of the trike plus my passenger, I'm probably better off with lower gearing at highway speed...especially if in the mountains or hill country. I've watched the tach to see if the VW rear end(has independent suspension) ratio created higher RPM. It evens out pretty close when compared to a stock Valk at similar speeds.

John, if you need the wing starter , I have one. It has the gear on it for reverse.
