I would like to mount a radar detector behind my head lite and in between the tach and speedometer if possible .... are there any mounts like this I can use  ?    and what would be a good brand of radar detector to use on the Valk that won't cost an arm and a leg ... like maybe a $100 or so .... Thanks Old Geezer

http://www.valkyrieriders.com/shoptalk/VSGPages/radardetectorinstall.htm  I have a Bel R65 Pro mounted as outlined in the shoptalk article.  Have it hooked up to work with the Zumo 550 and J&M CB.  Makes for a great system.

What I did was take the regular radar windshield mount and take the suction cups off. Drill out a hole in the center of it. Undo the windshield bolt, mount the radar bracket to the shield. Depending on the thickness of the mount you might need a longer bolt and a shorter nut. Mines been like this for 9 yrs.  Evil

Like Yardboy, I mounted it the same way using the existing windshield center bolt but I also picked up a very small tweeter (about the size of a silver dollar) and had it soldered onto the radar speaker as the detector was not loud enough for me. I attached it to the underside of the radar unit and the sound bounces off the light and shield. Sure gets your attention! On my FZ1 I mounted it ontop of the reservoir with some 3M hook n loop.

Oh, also having it mounted on the resvoir cover leaves it exposed to the weather. Seems to me to be more theft prone. On the shield, tween the gauges is out of the weather and hard to spot. I even leave it hooked up when I wash it with no probs. It has seen alot of rain and has been parked in some ruff areas with no troubles. Plus you can throw your gloves over it if you get pulled over!  police I can hear it with or with out helmet on, and with head phones on. Lights up great at night.  Evil

This is mine.  I used 1/4 " tubing (12" piece and made the right angle bend at 8".  The mount is a Sip Streamer...about $30 for the 1" bars.  Has held up well for over 9 years.

For what its worth and to each his own,

My brother in law is a Police Officer and he loves to stop you guys who have detector's.   Law enforcement have stepped up their fight against detectors and have come up with some pretty amazing equipment.  Before you spend all that time and energy integrating and installing a radar detector, google "Lidar radar" and see if it is worth it.  I tend to go over the speed limit but I find that I enjoy the ride much more on the back roads and cruising usually below the speed limit.

Matter of fact I was coming back from St.Louis yesterday and a white caddy flew by me (I was going 78 in a 70mph speed zone) and about 5 minutes later he was pulled over by a trooper.  Either he had a bad detector, didn't have it on (doubtful), or the trooper had better equipment than what is on the market.  I just don't see the need to speed, specially on a motorcycle.  I was one that was one speeding ticket away from being classified "high risk", in high school.  So if you got a detector, good luck and please be aware that you might escape a ticket but what if it is debris in the road or a car turning in your lane.  I don't think you can escape that...

Just be careful is all....  javascript:void(0);
