Sometimes ya just gotta go...

“You Can’t Be A Beacon…”

As my newest Harley riding friends cranked up their steeds to depart, one had her sound system on, and blaring from the speakers was that old ballad I hadn’t heard in several decades… Warm, friendly waves were exchanged, and the smile on my face was maxed-out! We rode off in different directions… as I listened until they were beyond hearing…

“You can't be a beacon if your light don't shine
You can't be a beacon if your light don't shine
There's a little light in all of us by God's design
But you can't be a beacon if your light don't shine”

Looking back on it, I guess you might say it was one of those ‘combo’ days. A genuine ‘Diamond’ day overall, but with a lump of ‘Coal’ inserted in the first half… A day that had started off so well, that had a mixed blessing aspect slipped in, then it had finished with a wonderful flourish!

It had been remarkably cool all morning long up until then. That was such a relief, too, and I was thinking we must have turned a major corner and pulled right out of the recent doldrums.

The sky was nearly completely free of any clouds, the humidity was quite low, the traffic was light, and… for a change, all road surfaces had been nice and smooth! Even the road and bridge surfaces had uncharacteristically all matched up! Could this be the result of clean living and pure thoughts? Probably not...

We cruised into a sleepy little hamlet that seemed unusually familiar to this forgetful rider, but then I spotted a convenience/gas store I was certain we’d stopped at before… We had, it turned out.

We didn’t need fuel yet, but a fanny break and a layer-shedding event were in order, so… With nothing coming from either direction, I made an improper turn from the wrong lane onto the parking lot on the other side of the road.

Following the break, I picked up some additional snacks to have for that evening in the next motel. I’d checked the tire air pressure the day before, and the reading of the rear tire had been right at the level where I usually add air.

The air pump feature of my Geek ‘combo unit’ had stopped working some time ago, and I'd finally gotten around to ordering a replacement pump, but… No dice this time. Procrastination can be such a curse!

Off-handedly, I inquired of the store clerk if they had an air pump. “Yes, but the unit is out of order…" The unit was located around the corner on the side of the building next to the one stall drive-thru car wash.

"The pump part of the machine still works (the vacuum cleaner part didn’t), so you can still use it, but you’ll still have to push the start button. No charge!” Well, how do you like that, I asked myself as a smile broadened across the face of a very pleased Valk rider…

Our girl was moved into position and made ready. Just like the lady inside had said, the pump came on when the ‘Start’ button was depressed. I thought I’d added plenty of air, so it was then time to check to see if any ‘fine tuning’ was needed… WHAT?

The air pressure reading was actually lower than it had been when checked just before ‘adding’! I tried again to add more air… Even less air pressure when checked that third time! What's up with this, I wondered aloud?!

I examined the air hose and nozzle assembly. I’d thought I had felt some air escaping during operation, and a closer inspection revealed that to be the case… Air was escaping at the swivel connection where the air hose joins the nozzle assembly. Double Dang!!!

As I stood there deciding what to do next, a pair of Harleys pulled in close by. I asked the first rider if she had a pump with her. She thought she’d remembered to pack it… mercifully, she had! I tried to screw its hose to my valve stem… No soap! Cindy then tried, but she was also unsuccessful. Joanie then gave it a try… nothing doing!

Cindy (the aunt) tried to tape over the air leak in the store hose… that didn’t work either, and by now adding air was no longer an option. By this time, I was starting to melt into the pavement, so the trusty ‘nap chair’ was extracted from my stack of gear, and I collapsed into it.

We discussed options, and Joanie (the niece) mentioned she recalled passing a tire store just up the road. She volunteered to go check with them, while Cindy and I would go inside where it was nice and cool to take a long and much needed 'water beak' and breather…

Just as I was deciding I would probably survive after all, Joanie joined us at our table inside and proclaimed with a big ol' grin, “All set!” The folks at the tire store had a portable air compressor unit mounted on a pickup truck, and the guy had followed her back to our girl. The air pressure had been topped off to my desired level, and he’d even checked the front tire! WOW!

We went back out, had a photo taken, said our farewells, and gave hugs… then we were off on our original missions… A pair of angels had flown by that morning with their beacons shining brightly upon this tired ol’ heat-sensitive bag of bones… Funk? What funk?!

Ross,

I know exactly what you mean! No 'angles' being worked by them that I noticed, though... Just a couple of really nice gals helping a fellow rider out. The aunt was the veteran rider showing her relative newbie niece the ropes of making a long ride. I'm sure there will be tales of having to help out a Honda geezer, but that's OK, they earned it! BTW, I used the jack again, and I was mighty happy to have it!!! THANKS!!!

DDT (12)

Seth,

Thanks, my friend! You said it! There are so many wonderful folks out here, too! It's easy to become cynical and downhearted with our species if we rely upon the so-called news for our information. However, when we travel around and meet folks face to face, we find our faith in 'us' being renewed and restored! I love North America and North Americans!!! I'm sure I'd say the same thing about all others, too, if I were to ride outside North America, but... That's probably not in the cards for this gypsy with broad limits but limits nonetheless!

Preston,

Ain't it so! I'm often asked what my favorite place to visit is... I don't really have one except that I love being around new-to-me folks in some distant setting. The backdrop has turned out, ironically, to be merely another detail. The folks themselves are proving to be the true highlight of my travels!!! There is so much goodness and so many good people in the world... Some of the other stuff too, but we usually find whatever we seek... I look for goodness and good folks, and I never fail to meet them all along the way!!!

DDT (12)

Gig,

Thanks a bunch, my good friend! I'd like to be in the same league with most of the good folks I encounter, but, alas, I still have much work to do towards self-improvement. You, for example, are one of those folks I've come across along the long route that have made a big difference in the lives of others, and in my life in particular. I appreciate ya, dude... Thanks for being you!

DDT (12)

P.S. I tried both of the two numbers I had for you and Lulu. I went to voicemail on the first, left a message, but I never heard back. The other number was answered by some female who informed my I'd reached a wrong number... Have y'all's numbers changed since JP and I visited?

Jim,

Thanks for the reply! You are so right! Nary a day goes by without some sort of positive interaction finding me... You betcha, there are multitudes of nice folks everywhere I've been. All I have to do is smile and behave like an adult, and folks always seem to respond in a pleasant way...

Great story Bruce cooldude

Wouldn't it be correct to say you encountered 3 angels?

The air compressor owner didn't have to follow the other one back to you.

Those screw on air chucks just don't work well on a motorcycle as they seem to release a lot of air when unscrewing. I replaced mine with the clamp on type.

Bill,

You are so right! I guess because I never saw him, out-of-sight out-of-mind... That was indeed a most generous thing he did, particularly since, according to Joanie, he wouldn't accept any payment for his good deed. She did finally persuade him to accept a 'tip', however.

That is among the many reasons I much prefer to roam around visiting small towns and rural communities. Goodness is to be found anywhere, of course, if we bother to look for it, and usually we don't have to try hard at all. Still, there is just something comforting about small places and the folks who live there.

Perhaps it has something to do with the 'no anonymity' in small places, or the shared feelings of interdependency, or something else entirely... It is real, though, palpable, and wonderful to experience.

I do agree with you about those danged ol' screw on air chucks! The replacement tire inflator I ordered that Barbo will bring to me at the Quad State Ride (I had it shipped to her house) will have the clamp-on thingy for attachment to the valve stem. That was one of the main features of that unit that helped me to decide upon it!

I hope all is well in New England...

I've often heard it said that no-one passes through our lives by chance.

Given how they showed up out of the blue at just the right time and the extraordinary amount of help that they were able to provide coupled with the song that played as they left.

They could've been Angels or at least Angels of Mercy sent into your life by Divine Providence at just the right moment in time.

Of one thing I am certain, their assistance most likely saved our favorite "Gypsy" from what could've led to a catastrophic event.

Mark,

Thanks, my friend, I always appreciate you sharing your thoughts, insights, and impressions of truly significant things. Some would say it's all random and simply the luck of the draw. Others, like this tired ol' gypsy, tend to lean towards your way off seeing all of this.

Countless times in my life, seemingly totally unrelated events and/or encounters have coincided at just the right time and place to produce meaningful and wonderful outcomes... I've been bailed out of jackpots so many times, that I'm beginning to believe I really do live a 'charmed' life! Or, that the 'hand of Providence' does indeed guide my journey, and that He does watch over this flawed, imperfect specimen. Yes, once again fate smiled favorably upon me that day!

I'm eager to hear of your big adventure out yonder! I apologize for not being able to help you with suggestions, but I do hope you understand. Following in someone else's wake is never as rewarding, for me anyway, as discovering all there is to experience for the first time ourselves... even though intuitively we would think otherwise.

It seems, for me anyway, that many of those surprises and completely unanticipated happenings turn out to be among the most meaningful and memorable aspects of my journey. I do hope it was so for you, as well... I'm assuming since you're back and posting, that Providence kept your 'fat out of the fire' too!

Hebrews 13:2 says, "Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some have unwittingly entertained angels".

Paired of course with the fact that meeting people on the road is often the most memorable part of the adventure.

Years ago when I first  traveled to Yellowstone and Glacier national parks, I took 100's of pictures of scenery. Looking back at the pictures I realize I should have just purchased post cards. The only pictures that mean anything are the ones of the people in my life. Some of them no longer walk this earth.

But Bruce My Friend for what ever reason these Angels Were put in your path and just Maybe you weren't supposed to leave when you desired to leave! Some obstacles Are put in our way to save us from ourselves. NOT sayin this is the case here BUT Maybe? RIDE SAFE.
