Watching You Tube videos. When ever a metric rider gets cut off or whatever. They rev their bike to the rev limiter. Some times behind or next to offending vehicle. Is that supposed to be some kind of intimidating factor? Maybe the little beep beep horn can't be heard? Smiley

Don't cut them off. Better yet if I see you on your phone I will respond the same way but I don't hit the rev limiter.  Wink Not a believer in using the horn but only when necessary. BTW everybody wants cut off a MC rider thus we have to ride accordingly.

I’ve wondered about that myself as it’s done with the street racing cars as well and I have no idea what it really proves. The only thing I could rationalize is that it shows they’re pegged to the limit.

Horns  do not work , unless the  car  or  truck has  a window  opened.

The  new  vehicles today are  sound proof inside ..
Some body's brain fart , In the  vehicle ind...

I run my outside speakers  as  loud  as I can !

I do not really rev . So ..
And  I thought it was Harley riders that did  that ?

Interesting question.   When riding any of my Valkyries, I don't generally have any issues with being cut off in traffic.  The two issues I do see often is being tail gated and cagers pulling out in front of me at intersections.   Reving my engine would be a useless effort IMHO.

I had not noticed or experienced this phenomenon. Usually when I am hitting the rev limiter I don’t have the clutch disengaged so I assume that doesn’t count? Since I am currently riding an 1800, the need to hit the rev limiter to get the desired result is pretty much nonexistent!

And piss people off, and cause many to assume all MC riders are assholes.

And ruin your hearing acuity.  (I now wear earplugs whenever riding.  It's the wind roar (half helmet), not my pipes (though the Air Flow tips are a tad noisier than stock).

There's a guy in my neighborhood has a very spendy CVO that's noisy enough, even at 25-30 in the neighborhood, I know whenever he rides by, and I have nice new windows and doors and insulation.  No revving, just putting by.

I'm not sure about the original post of this thread.  I don't believe I have heard enough to notice anyone regularly revving to the limiter.  I don't.

I do run loud pipes.  I have seen and know that louder pipes causes other traffic to notice one more often.  It is reasonable to assume that that indeed does save some lives.

Why notice "metric" bikes revving?  I hear the alleged "American" bikes revving their engines at a stop but I haven't noticed any going to the limiter.

It must only happen in certain parts of the country, but then I've traveled in all parts of the country but for the most recently admitted states.

I don't know about where you guys live, but the numbers of cars and trucks with headers on them has really exploded where I live.  Mostly newer vehicles too.

The 4 and 6 banger 'Tuners' especially enjoy revving up and squawking tires and speeding though my residential neighborhood.

Lots of new and newer trucks with headers too, but they don't rev much.

Folks just grooving on the noise.

My goodness, I'm so glad I'm passed that stage.  I do enjoy a nice rumble but, really don't like loud pipes on anything (or loud music).   If I happen to ride with a group and some have loud pipes, I'll always try to get in front of those pipes or be way back behind them.   I don't agree or believe that loud pipes save lives (at least the majority of the time), but already having a upper range hearing loss means I don't wish to risk losing any more.   The thing about hearing loss is, you don't/won't realize it's going until it's gone.

My hearing is diminished, all those 96db  concerts had by nothing to do with it…
Hey Ron: do suppose having played football may contribute to hearing loss? I wonder, got constant ringing now… tinnitus I think, doc says I have broken bones in a my ear  tickedoff

Gig, I suppose anything is possible but, I'm not qualified to make that call.   What I do know is that as a Grunt in the Marines and maintaining Expert status with both Pistols, Rifles and Riot Shotguns wasn't any help, then add in being an Artillery Officer, those howitzers are dang loud even with the foam plugs that were provided were still deafening add that noise to the normal marksmanship requirements.   Not real sure how I passed my flight physical to go to flight school but helicopters aren't exactly the quietest birds out there   I didn't attend very many concerts as a young adult so, I can only imagine that.   This doesn't even include my hotrod and farming ranching with loud machines.
Loud noises will cause deafness, this I am sure of.

Big round motors on aircraft turb props and pure jets. I was around all of this. Add in pistol fire and long gun and I've stood just behing a Nany 5" 38 cannon when it fired more than once. Raced motocross and stock cars in dirt roundy round. And lets Not fergit some of the trucks I drove had straight pipes. Simple things like hammering nails and beating metal straight With out Proper hearing protection do not help either. Some may Not agree But when I RIDE I have those foam ear plugs in my ears. 2 reasons actually. Protect whats left of my hearing and keeps curious bugs from further explorations! RIDE SAFE.

Excellent reasons to use the foam plugs Dennis.   Blocking the path to the void inside helps eliminate that buzzing sound once in a while.   Wink

Me and my Valk at Freedom Rock

« Reply #20 on: August 21, 2024, 09:59:28 AM »

In BV (Before Valkyrie) I had a 1100 Shadow ACE. Think it was a 97. Beautiful bike. Cobra straight drag pipes. Alternate universe loud.

Got a 99 Valkyrie tourer. Quietest bike I've nearly never heard.

What was nice about the quietness was that I could hear traffic behind and around me now.
I couldn't on the Shadow.

So my experience is that quiet bikes save lives because I can hear others around me.

Had a lot less close encounters with the Valk. Had lots with the Shadow.
