Seems I saw a thread that stated what key blanks other than honda would work for our bikes.  Friend just picked up an Interstate that he's going to revive.  No key, no trunk.  Understand the code was on the back of helmet locks on the trunk.  Also, is the code on/in the ingnition?  If he can get the code, other than a honda blank, what others will work?

My 1999 standard came with 2 spare keys they are Curtis HD74.

ILCO HD57 is also a blank that will work.

I wanted a spare key. I took my key to ACE hardware and they had a perfect match blank. My bike is a 97. I’m pretty sure interstates being newer use a different blank. I’d still try ACE

Honda used at least two different 'keyways' for the Valkyrie. I know because my two Valkyries use both: HD-74 and HD-75. The keyway refers to the long grooves precut into the blank.

Thought I'd be helpful and took one the bags to a locksmith, 30 minutes later I had a key that worked....ILCO HD74 blank.  IN THE MEANTIME, my friend had gotten a blank and made his own key that worked in ignition, tank and bags.  Said he read up on how to do it last night on the net, just did it.  Geez!

THE REST OF THE STORY.........I was at a dealer looking at a pristine 98 Standard, black, 66K, and the IS was in the back of the shop.  My lucky day, the dealer was a vet, like me, and needed floor space for some new bikes coming in.  He was great, I got the Standard (lots of extras) and the IS for $3K out the door, everything included.  Walking on air.  My friend helped me load the IS on a trailer and made the comment that he always wanted a Valk and was looking for a project.  I told him....I get the bags and brackets and sold him the IS for $600, what I paid.  He's an amazing build guy and I know he'll do much better with it than I ever could.  Plus, I get to work on it with him!

BTW - the pristine black Valk will be thoroughly checked out, then given to my Grandson that just got out of the Army.  He wanted my Bumblebee, but not ready to give it up.

Both the HD-74 and HD-75 blanks are very common. I found them at the nearby Big R (farm and ranch) store. The young guy there said he wasn't too good at cutting 2 sided keys, so I bought a few blanks for a buck each and took them to a locksmith. He was a rider and cut them for free.

The key for my Interstate was pretty worn. In fact, it would slide out of the ignition switch in either the off or ON position. It sure would be inconvenient if the key fell out while riding! Luckily I had a spare that was less worn to use for making the new one. I assume a good locksmith could adjust the cutter to compensate for that wear if I only had a worn one.

UPDATE:  My friend rolled the IS into his garage late in the day on Wed, 8/28.  He made a key himself.  He briefly fired up the bike on Friday, 8/30, using starter fluid.  The tank was empty and had no rust, the rear drive oil looked like it had just been put in, plugs were ok, coolant looked new too.  Changed oil, new air filter, several vacuum lines replaced.  Seafoam and gas and she ran pretty damn good from the start, just got better and better.  He rode it around the neighborhood some.  On Sunday, 9/1, he and I took our new Valks on a ride of about 100 miles.  Can't believe he got the IS going, and going really well and smooth, in so short a time.  We think it must have been serviced just before it was parked.  The story we got from our dealer was the OP bought the bike, then had a heart attack, parked it and never rode it again.  It still had the temp dealer tag from 2017 on it!

Friend says he wanted a Valk from the first time he saw it when they first came out.  He's had other bikes, and has a beautiful Nomad now also.  After riding his Valk, thinks he should have bought one years ago.  I agree.
