I woke up just in time to watch Mechazilla catch it with the chopsticks live...
Wow... What a time to be alive...
From sci fi author Devon Eriksen over on X:
This is what will matter 1000 years from now.
Not your politics. Not your stupid tantrums about who platformed who on some website. Not your incomprehensible desire to send NASA's entire budget to the third world.
This guy reignited the Space Age.
He spent his own money, hired a bunch of dudes, and reignited the Space Age. And together, they underbid and outdid NASA and its pet dinosaur corporations on every conceivable level.
This is history happening before you.
If you are a puddlefish, if you think this is a wasteful showpiece or science project, then you don't understand physics, economics, astronomy, or in fact the basic layout of the universe you live in.
We live in a tiny puddle at the bottom of a well.
Out there is an entire universe, full not only of stuff to explore, but full of stuff to build things out of.
Big things. Wonderful things. Things that are going to make all of the cool stuff you have today, all of human civilization to date look like early Assyrians writing stuff down on wet clay with a reed.
Infinite resources. Infinite energy. Infinite space.
Instead of fighting over little patches of land, we will have an infinite 3d volume. Enclose it in steel, pump it full of air, spin it, and it's a habitat.
Instead of scratching tiny scraps of metal out of the crust of one planet, we will break down entire asteroids and smelt them.
Instead of drilling for hydrocarbons and turning water wheels, we will harness entire suns, split the atom, and eventually draw our fuel from the substance that makes up 99% of the entire universe.
None of your local, temporal Earth politics matter compared to this. This is more important than pride parades and abortions, more important than tribal conflicts in eastern Europe and southwest Asia, more important than tensions with Russia and China.
More important, in the long run, than the United States of America.
America's most important function, its one most vital purpose, is to serve as an incubator for this.
Because this changes everything.
All of our arguments about conditions on this planet become obsolete, because the whole planet becomes just one suburban neighborhood.
All of our wars over resources and territory become obsolete, because no one has time to brawl when we're all sitting on top of a dragon horde with sacks and shovels.
Everyone who was alive at the time remembers where they were when Kennedy died in Dallas. When the towers fell. When the Eagle landed. When the Wall came down.
But this... this is the real moment, one of the first of many. They are what every child will know about a thousand years from now, even if they have four arms and are genetically engineered for zero-g, or are sentient blocks of code running on a sphere of computronium enclosing an entire star.
You may not live to see that, depending on what we do or don't invent, and when.
But it will happen, and you will live to see wonderful things.
If the puddlefish don't get in the way.
Don't be a puddlefish.

His driving ideal or fear is that we need to colonize other worlds in case we destroy this one
He wants to ensure humanity endures
Unlike those who simply work on ways to kill us
He is not perfect, he has his demons as do we all, but the dude is one smart man indeed
That was the most amazing thing I think I have ever seen in the space race
Reusable boosters, rockets that can land and perhaps take off again just wow

It makes Trumps Space Force seem much more plausible and timely with all the technological advances that SpaceX has brought to the forefront of travel off planet. Star Trek has always been one of my favorite shows both the original and most of the newer ones too, as they tickled my imagination. But it does take some special people to turn the imagined into reality. The opportunities for future generations shine a little brighter with these strides in new technology.
But now I have a new issue to ponder, am I a puddlefish?

The man has vision…foresight. The old saying of think outside the box is right in his wheelhouse and is putting NASA and Boeing to shame as of now. He’s put si-fi into reality and hopefully it will continue to grow AND promote the industry to become more competitive with other outside companies engaging in research, development and innovations.
On the other hand there are those who oppose him, you’ll have to see the P&M board for that topic.

...and at least for now, you can get REAL close to 'em. I remember as a kid we went to Cape Canaveral, and you couldn't get within a mile or more of the shuttle... If you get the chance the ride down to Boca Chica Texas is a nice one, just check to make sure they haven't closed the beach at that time. This is KK and I in front of the first Starship test vehicle. They stacked it the next day...

Woah... View from the tower cam: https://x.com/i/status/1845931987347165548Note the precision, the booster is being caught not by the fins, but by two pins, one on each side, designed to carry the load... Getting things lined up to that precision after hurtling back from space is just mind blowing...

I remember the moon walk especially well. I was 15-16, pumping gas at a Mobil station (for $1.25hr), and the boss made us all come in to unload the 3 bay garage entirely and paint it inside. He put many cases of beer in the ice cooler, and we worked all night and all got drunk as lords. Had a little TV set to watch the moon walk. Finished at sunup, and drove my old '62 Volkswagon home.

Regarding the "Moon Walk". It was July 1969. I was in Racine Wisconsin at my Wife-to-be's rental apartment. I had just asked for her hand in marriage and she said yes and we watched the moon walk on her TV lying there on living room floor. And regarding working at a gas station. I worked at a Shell gas station in Myrtle Beach, SC (64-66) during the summer. The gentlemen who was the Boss had a bottle of bourbon in his desk drawer (the station was on US 17 just at the turn to the "old" Pavilion). Lots of traffic. The boss would generally be in a very good mood by quitting time. Also, coming of age. I was working one day and I was inside where the cigarette machine was located. Again, I was maybe 17 -18 and not really sexually active. A gentlemen came in (as his car was being filled up outside) and walked up to me and whispered into my ear, "Do you have any condoms?". That was real surprise. So, I asked the boss and found out we did keep Sultans in a box in the locked area at the base of the cigarette machine. The boss gave me the key and told the man "that would be 25 cents sir". And yes, I can remember some things better than others. But growing up in Myrtle Beach was something I shall never forget. In fact, we just were there (Myrtle Beach) today and drove by the house we use to live in. Totally different. But the memories will never leave.

But I was interested. Our boss made us give 'super service', which included washing every window in the car (and if the other pump jockey wasn't busy, that meant 2 guys on every car). Now miniskirts were all the rage at that time, and while washing those windshield, some views were simply wonderful. One of the older mechanics told me that if I spent 5 minutes on a windshield, I was going to get caught looking, and if the female complained, I might get fired. "So you can look, but try to avoid slobbering buddy." Another thing I learned at that gas station was how to steal cigarettes out of the station machine. You'd stick an ice-pick up in the bottom dispenser slot, and slide a pack off the rack above. Not that I smoked. The things you remember (and sorry for the drift).

Oh yes, washing the windows was a requirement but, depending on the occupants of the car (don't forget it was summertime at Myrtle Beach, SC) is a something we sort of fought to do. Sometimes two of uw would wash the windows. And yes, there were some very exciting views ..... Ahhhh yes, the sixties.

I'm a poet and my feet show it, because they're Longfellow's. Sorry for the big drift, back to Elon and rocket ships.

Woah.... The Mechazilla Chopsticks with men standing on top for scale.... Spacex built that tower in a matter of months. A year maybe... There's an SLS tower on government contract that will be used for launch but doesn't have to catch any flying spaceships that's years behind schedule and so far way over budget. Billions... The tallest building in the world, the Bhurj Khalifa, cost less than the sls tower and was built quicker. -Mike
