WARNING this is a long message !!  Sorry,

I'm like Eric I have a sheepskin cover, beads cover laying on a shelf. I rode a Goldwing Aspencade but not very far at one time. I would get off the bike and not want to ride again my butt hurt. I tried the Helpers and they did help but the pain or soreness wasn't stopped just toned down.  I'm a long distance runner and I don't sign-up for a marathon and go run it I train for many weeks to condition myself. One day riding in the spring (winter shut-down) I thought why not condition my riding muscles. I started doing 50 mile rides, then 100, 200, etc.
It not only helped it worked ! That summer I was riding 700 mile days to visit my friend that was work transfered (girl of course Smiley. I would take the next day off. Last summer I rode cross country riding 400/500 mile days on my stock 98 Tourer seat.
Every spring now I start off with several short rides to get in shape. I would like a Russell seat, maybe this year.

I still have my buttbuffer.  They are the best gel pads you can get.  However I dont use it anymore because I have an ultimate seat and its not needed.  If your seat hurts your butt you will be able to ride all day long on a buttbuffer they are worth the money when you compare them to a good seat

If you want an amazing improvement in any seat (including my Ultimate Low and Big Boys), go with an Airhawk seat cushion.  You float on air, and they do not slide around with the rubber mesh cover on the bottom (no need to tie them down, just throw in the bags when leaving the bike).  Expensive, but way cheaper than any new/used seat upgrade. Allows unlimited miles on your butt, and lets air underneath you in HOT weather (if we ever see any again...).

I recommend a driver's medium.

Cheapest here:  http://www.rlmotorcycles.com/cgi-bin/eShop/index.cgi?cart_id=1266331064.26691&pid=3&product=AirHawk

Those are comfy....I almost bought one, but went with the gel because the air pad lifted me up too much, didnt like the height change with the air thing

On long rides, soft and cushy is not the way to go.

What happens is the seat material deforms and extrudes, it puts pressure on your tailbone (coccyx), all this from sitting so long in one position.  You'll get off the bike and can't hardly stand up straight.

I've a Diamond seat that I use for trippin'. It's as hard as a rock but I love it on the long rides. The seat is big, wide and flat, allowing to move around back and forth, and that's a plus on those whole day 600+ mile rides.

had mine installed under the seat cover. excellent for me and I have the classic boney butt when sitting. motorcycle consumer news did an excellent article a fews ago of why different seats work for different people. I also use a sheep skin cover.

I had the Butt Buffer installed under the covers of my seats (his & hers) at Americade a few years ago... unfortunately, neither of us felt the "improvement". Shortly thereafter I sprang for the Ulitmate seats & back rests. Pricey? Yes. But for us, oh so worth it!

Of course, everyone's butt is different so YMWV! Anyway, I still have my original seats. If you're anywhere near MA I'd be happy to let you try 'em out if you'd like.

Purchased a couple of them a few years ago.  I got the smaller size ones.  Wrong thing to do.  I think they would enhance the ride, but the smaller width one makes you feel like you're obviously sitting on something and is uncomfortable after a short while.  In my opinion, you're better off with the large size that more closely matches the overall width of the seat.  Your results and mileage may vary . . .
