On Oct. 8 she awoke to extreme vertigo accompanied by the usual tossing of seemingly everything eaten since Thanksgiving...1980. This had also happened about six months ago but not as bad so I was able to lead her through the Epley maneuver which addresses vertigo caused by the inner ear. At that time it was successful but this current episode was so violent she couldn't begin to do anything more than roll her eyes a little. After a call to her primary dr., it was suggested she go to the ER so once she was able to walk without doing a face plant we headed out. With her age and indications presented, they decided to do a complete workup whereupon they discovered her right carotid was at least 70% blocked. An MRI, CT scan, and ultrasound all verified the findings. With that it was "Miss Nancy, you're not going anywhere." She was given something for the vertigo, she doesn't handle those kind of drugs very well...much to everyone's amusement. Four days & three nights later they sent her home to await a scheduling for a medical Roto-rooter of the offending carotid, the surgeon didn't recommend a stent. The good news, if any, was that she did not have a stroke. An ENT dr. confirmed it was an inner ear thing, the blockage discovered was totally aside from the vertigo, I feel discovering that was purely Providential.

So, the surgery was scheduled for a couple weeks later and we arrived in hopes of an early remedy being accomplished...but not to be. She was all prepped and ready for the procedure when I noticed her pulse on the monitor was showing 35-38, which brought everything to a hault. They then put her on a 7 day heart monitor and after looking at her meds list, suggested she discontinue the Atenolol which she recently started taking for blood pressure control. Within 36 hours of stopping it, her pulse was back to normal. A later appt. with her cardiologist confirmed she's ready for the carotid procedure so yesterday was the day. She was in lala land for 3-4 hrs. following it but by 5:00pm was nearly back to normal. The procedure went as planned with good results per the surgeon, they kept her overnight and when she called me this morning to come get her it was the old Nancy. Upon my arrival, I was relieved to see the perky & chatty gal I knew. On the way home, she wanted to stop in our favorite restaurant for breakfast and ate a big pancake meal. She did complain the incision would be an ugly scar on the side of her neck so I suggested she simply grow another chin which would cover it up so nobody would notice. She knew I was teasing...but still went over like a fart in an elevator. Grin

She has a two week followup and if all checks out fine it's off to warmer climes for a couple months. My son-in-law in Lousiana wants my two-wheel Valk so we'll head for Florida via Lousiana, dropping both the bike and U-haul off in Alexandria. If my friend Dennis & his lady love Waterbug are available, I might try hooking up for lunch on our way east.

Sorry for you guy's trouble John, and very glad to hear she's been provided good medical care.

I also think she's lucky to have a good man like you watching over her.   cooldude

Wonderful outcome for you both. Having a appetite after all that is encouraging. Happy New Year to you both.

It delayed our plans for Louisana, we had planned to make an early Fall trip down/back in the week in October that this issue showed up. Once discovered we were warned against any travel until corrected, the correcting procedure got delayed due to Nancy's low heart rate. Everyone in the prep room got a laugh from me giving her a kiss and the pulse went even lower. The surgeon suggested I'm losing my touch.  Wink

Now Louisiana will merely be a delay enroute instead of a 1-2 week round trip adventure which originally included some sightseeing and visiting some old friends.

John,

I just love happy outcomes! Glad things worked out for y'all... Just so you'll know, I think your additional chin idea makes perfect sense for covering scars...  coolsmiley

My wife has had a blocked carotid artery (total, 100%) for several years (well before we moved out to KC) now. They didn't want to do the roto rooter to her for fear it could lead to something worse. As long as at least one of the 2 is open, she will be Ok.

John, we are happy about the good news.  And you won't be bitchin' about that Green Bay cold.

Renting a trailer?  Last year my buddy rented a U-Haul motorcycle trailer to bring his Honda to my garage.  U-Haul (in NC, anyways) requires open trailers, like the MC trailer, to be returned to the place where it was rented.  No one-way rental.  If you are planning to use that model trailer, you may want to ask about the rental rules.

That kissing problem could be serious! I would suggest physical therapy, at least 4 15 minute sessions each day monitoring heart rate and blood pressure while varying kissing regimen.

John,

As usual, a most sensible suggestion from our friend in Kentucky! Please let us know how that works out..

Agreed on the results of kissing.

Reference the suggested physical therapy,  I tried that on my loving wife, she figured out my motives.   2funny
Regardless, I'm happy about Nancy's outcome.   Looking forward to seeing both John and Nancy at the next InZane.

Scary situation but it seems excellent results followed.

Glad to hear she’s home and in good spirits. As for the scar, maybe a tattoo can add a little flair and humor to it.  Grin

Seriously though, glad everything worked out well. Let her rest up, heal and do your trip when the doctor says go for it.

Scars on us old people are just wounds received in the battle for life.

Not exactly a merit badge, but nothing to be ashamed of either.

I can show most all of mine in public (along with the missing teeth).   Grin

I'd pass on a tattoo.

John, I'll take your suggestion under advisement. I do know from past experience my own heart rate and BP has gone up under those circumstances when involved with such antics with Nancy, it never occured to me to check hers. I apparently was preoccupied at the time.  Roll Eyes Wink

I'm just glad to have her back as the quiet and demure lady that she is...when asleep!  Grin

John , tell Nancy not to worry about a scar. She is married to you. Who will see the scar. Showing off scars can be dangerous.  I was showing off a scar , some laughed , some screamed. The cop said  ,"maybe people do not want to see a vasectomy scar"!
