Was out looking at a popular small gun shop. Looking at a Taurus "JUDGE". And the owner made the comment about not being able to find 45 long colt ammo. Did some quick looking once I got home, online and that does seem to be true. Even on some ammo sites suggested here some time back. The weapon will fire .410 shells too. But it seems that would be hard on your hand after a while.

Had a Smith 45 long colt some time ago. Being on a "K" frame it was a very tame recoil. Loved it, but ammo was hard to get 20 years ago.

sure looks that way on line.... when I picked up mine I was able to get it online but not local... and the 410 really isnt that bad.. if you go with the federal 000 I think they used less powder to fir the extra shot. but I am not sold on the penetration as of yet...

just sold my judge.. got caught up in the hype when they first came out... I bought the stainless 4 inch barrell.. couldnt hit a paper plate at 15ft. with the 410 buckshot.. while a 45 long colt has a lot of powder they dont make a self defense round for it.. that caliber seems to be popular with the cowboy action shooters but they arent tryin to protect anything.. I guess it would depend on what you want one for but if its for home defense or self defense there are much better choices available ..

Better to be judged by 12, then carried by 6.

Up here north of ya its plenty, just expensive. I find cowboy rounds more then others. I find it $40 for a box of 20 lead bullet for cowboy shoots. I was lucky to find some copper at a gun show a few months ago. $20 for a box. I have a Winchester .45LC that I love.

I think Gander Mountain in Greenwood now has some in stock, as well as smaller gun shops. But, as fudgie states, buying it will really put a dent in your wallet. I received a Lee Turret Press for Christmas so I can make some of my own. As an aside, the general consensus seems to be that the Judge is a fun novelty gun, but lacking as a self defense weapon. The .410 buckshot spreads out fast, and penetration is questionable. Still, I like mine.

as a cowboy action shooter I have always reloaded my own. I buy starline brass and use winchester powder and primer with a lead bullet on top. Alot cheaper than commercial loads and you can tame down the load or up it depending on your preference. just my 2 cents.

Vanagon40........What is the feeling between the 45 and the .410 shell? And how bad does it kick? When I checked one out, the grip seemed a little small in my hand, like it might be hard to hang on to if it had a respectable recoil.

do you remember what one you tried? the defender felt too small for me. but the 4 inch barrel had a bigger grip on it and feels good

Gangman,
Sorry about the delayed response. I did not notice much difference in the .45 and .410, but the .45s were all cowboy action loads.
My 20 year old son did not complain about the kick (very limited shooting experience) and he actually hit a clay pigeon from a mechanical thrower. (My nephew also hit a few clay pigeons, but he is pretty experienced and can hit lots of things that I shoot at and miss.)
