Contact the credit card company. They have a list of stupid questions to ask. -are you sure she is dead.
T R U T H  American air lines customer service. Are you sure she is dead?
Cable company - did your wife give you permission to change the account.
Phone service- you are not on the account. we need to talk to your wife. How come you have different last names.
Amazon Prime. You do not have an account with us. The account is in another name and I can't tell you who it is.
But I am paying on it .  It was cancelled in 2022. (amazon said) I said then you owe me a lot of money. I have been paying on it all along.
NO ,it is not your account. Amazon finally said the resolution department will E-mail me in 24 hours with a decision.

Yep, went through all that last February when my mom died.   Ended up sending either copies of her death and my birth certificate or pictures of the same documents with a copy of her will designating me as her executor to get all those accounts closed.   Took me almost a year to get one credit card company to refund an over payment.

When anyone close to you dies and you will have to handle things, the very first thing you do is get a big stack of death certificates (because everyone will want one).

The devil is in the details Tracy.  Banks and investment companies can be tougher than local stores and utility companies (they have lawyers on staff who require all formalities so they will not be easily sued).

And joint ownership with right of surivorship is easier than bequests in a will or trust.  Except a joint owner can take it all and run away, any time (something all married people should keep in mind).

I have been blessed in my life to have never had to deal with this once personally (only advice to others).

Make copies of the death certificates. Give copy , but carry original. I would ask what they do with them. Copy and destroy.

I have found that sending an original or certified copy with a request to return it
has ALWAYS worked. I give them a self addressed stamped envelope if I had mailed
the original     Worked on NYS Comptroller's office ( Tax ), insurance, all banks and pension funds

I just tell them this is our only one left and returning it after scanning into their system
would be greatly appreciated

Only NYS Surrogate's Court needs a certified copy not to be returned ever

same they told me get 10 or so but only needed a few is all.  My mom did not have much besides a checking account and basic bills is all, no credit cards, etc.  I asked a few places if they needed OEM birth certificates and most said not needed.

For those who still have parents or just preparing for the end.  I spent some time getting access to my Mom's accounts.  I was set up having full access to all her banking and stocks accounts.  So, when she passed away several years ago, there was little to do except informing them she was gone.  There were two bank accounts, and I sent them copies of the death certificate.  The Stocks folks wanted a certified copy.   She still had health insurance from my dad's company, they only wanted a copy.  Thankfully, we (Mom and I) had sold her home and car, so that was not a problem.

The funeral home gave me 5 certified certificate and 5 copies.   I still have 3 certified copies and several copies.

I believe that if you trust your kids, having them as full members on you banking or stock account will help them when you pass.   In a few years will start the process with our kid who lives in the same town we live in (just down the block).

Gosh, I can't remember the exact term used but, I could write checks on my mom's account but, was not a co-owner so when she passed away the account was locked up and I couldn't do squat until the death certificates came from the state.   Mom's funeral home didn't give anything away but, thankfully she took my advice and had paid upfront years earlier for her service(s).   That made it much easier with less stress on the entire family but especially for me as executor of the estate.   I highly recommend that everyone consider making arrangements prior to your own passing.

I believe that if you trust your kids, having them as full members on you banking or stock account will help them when you pass.

With trust, that's pretty good advice.  Most bank and credit unions let you either 1) make accounts 'joint ownership' (they can access it anytime), or 'named beneficiaries', and usually to A, but if A is dead, then to B) (or, to all my children, or the survivors thereof) (they cannot access it while you are alive, but it goes to them with a death certificate, and therefore it does not pass via your will and/or probate).

Trust is a good thing, but another thing one can do is;  So long as you are in good heath (and not a ticking time bomb health-wise), and do not have a high risk job, you can wait before adding joint owners to accounts until the end is closer.  But don't have a bike accident.

Most everything I have is joint ownership or named beneficiaries, and a simple will, except my house (obviously my largest asset).  I'm not risking that at all.  And I told those who will inherit.... right now, if I die or get killed unexpectedly, the house will have to go through probate (and that's a big PITA), but there's plenty of money in my estate to cover those costs.  But when the end is coming (or even a decent possibility) then I will add your name(s) to the house.  You do that with warranty deed that must be properly filed in the county register of deeds (A to A,B,C & D)  (not a quit claim deed).
