Sometimes ya just gotta go...

Winter Springs, FL - Occasionally...

By Any Other Name…

Softieness or... something else? I consider myself to be on the threshold of mastering the dubious pursuit of laziness. Of course, my dad would have persuasively argued that I'd already perfected that trait during my teen years... In either case, however... I'm still practicing or refining that. Or maybe... Nah, it must be one or both of those and sugar-coating it wouldn't mask the simple truth.

I was all prepared to load up our girl and head out to continue our wandering a recent beautiful morning. As I almost always do, I'd taken the precaution of studying the weather forecast one more time at the last minute to obtain the very latest guesstimate of immediate conditions and/or potential drama. While things would be great here that day and the next, there was now a good possibility of some light showers where we'd be the following morning.

Well, if we had to be stationary, I'd prefer to be that way right here rather than there, so... Heck, we were in no hurry anyway... My next commitment was over three weeks away, but only a long three-day ride from here by the shortest, most direct route… I much preferred to stretch the ride into a leisurely three-week meander of a couple thousand miles, so…

The chance of showers there on the morrow wasn't a sure thing, and most likely we'd have been OK, but... "Never let a good threat go to waste," I reminded myself, as I sauntered towards the motel office to 're-enlist' for another two nights and have my key cards recharged... all the while sporting a broad grin across my face! “We could even delay the onset of PMS by riding to the Waffle House in a little while,” I muttered under my breath, as I sought to further bolster confidence in the choice I was making.

For every problem or challenge, there is a solution or answer... We may not find it or we might not like it if we do, but there will be actionable items available for addressing whatever it is that vexes or confronts us… sometimes actual solutions, other times merely coping suggestions. It is entirely possible in this particular case, though, that I'd conjured up an opportunity and craftily disguised it as a challenge in order to justify selection of the ‘remedy’ I really wanted in the first place… one of those subtle subconscious influence things… I'm good at that also...

Whatever the answer to this conundrum truly was, however, the short fact was simple: We'd be staying put for another two nights... at least... Oh yeah, you saw that coming, right? I'll by the end of the extension period be within striking distance of justifying yet another departure delay of a couple of nights to avoid riding through another major city on a weekday...

When we put our minds to it, we can make just about any choice appear appropriate, sometimes even borderline wise... “By any other name, a rose smells just as sweet…” Hmmm, no doubt about it, I do think I am getting pretty good at mental gymnastics...

Carl,

Oh yeah, can't we all!!! When I was a young man, I came to a conclusion that the only person to whom we can't lie is ourselves... That was because we knew what we knew, and anything knowingly false would be immediately exposed as such. Like with so many 'truths' as I understood them to be at that stage of my development, I later learned that I had been wrong... Self-deception is actually a skill nearly all of us master fairly early in life! Some of us even achieve an 'expert' level...

Terry,

I don't think so, but our dads would have found much agreement had they ever met!

Jimmy,

Yes, I have become a 'gymnast (contortionist?) of thought'. I had to in order to 'justify' some of the boneheaded decisions I've made! Thanks for the compliment... Are you planning on making IZ this time? If I see ya there, maybe we can have a brew or two together and compare notes...

Oh yeah, you saw that coming, right?

Yep, I hauled off and did it again. No need, I reasoned, to ride through the craziness of large city traffic choked down and funneled over a river crossing during a weekday. We've all done it, of course, but for this timid city traveler, I avoid it if possible, nowadays... like this time through. No problem...

Another two leisurely days of loafing... I only needed to extend my stay again by one more day to miss the dreaded vehicle-menagerie snarl, but the weather forecast happened to call for chilly temps on the re-revised departure date... I couldn't resist such an acceptable excuse being so danged easily available, so I opted for the additional day! Could I be a 'Gen-Zer' trapped inside a 'baby-boomer' body? OK, time now for another nap...
