Seeing we just got 4" inches of snow overnight, perfect time to do my tax filing. Tongue

I put it off almost as long as possible, for no good reason except laziness. Roll Eyes

Having a son who is a CPA makes tax time a non issue for me. Of course, me being on social security, means not a lot of work for him either. Being cash poor is not always a bad thing!

My ex-brother in law CPA used to do mine, but he became ex Smiley

I did my own for 20 years while being self employed. Kind scary.

Now I get W2s and use the free service online but it still sucks somewhat.

I do it the easy way by using the free AARP service offered locally and they use a conference room in the local library. You make an appointment to drop off your papers, they give you a pick-up time for about two hours later to go over the returns, sing them and leave. Wisconsin has personal income tax, a rip-off at best, so there's two returns involved. I get four 1099's; my pension from State of Florida, SS, Edward Jones Investments, interest on savings from my bank. I use the minimum withdrawal requirement on my Edward Jones account to pay my tax so as long as it shows growth it works out about even. The last couple years I had to pay a bit out of pocket due to lack of growth but not a big deal. The tax service transmits the returns the moment you sign them, then I go home and get online to the IRS and pay any outstanding balance. Takes minutes and you're through until next year. The service has your SS# in their system so next year they enter that and up comes all the preliminary info that automatically fills in the returns. From there it's just a matter of entering new info and since I no longer have major deductions as I did while being a caretaker, the standard deduction is more than sufficient. I've not paid any Wisconsin income tax since I've lived here but the Feds still have their hands in my pocket. If Trump gets SS exempted from tax, I may not have to pay any Federal tax either, at present it hits a major part of my SS.

Last couple years I used the IRS free service and it was mostly easy.

They already have my W-2's on file and you just have to confirm the info.

All the other info is retained from the previous year, so no re-typing.

Some states that have income tax are signed up so you just follow through with that after filing Feds.

All in all pretty easy, except paying, that sucks.

I can't help feeling I'm working with the enemy though.
