Congress passed the Real ID legislation in 2005. Real ID is issued at local DMVs.

According to both local and national news media, lines at DMVs are huge.

What in the hell were people waiting for? It does seem Procrastinators have united.   crazy2
I have absolutely no sympathy for those who waited. Got mine several years ago when I renewed my drivers license.

Texas began issuing Real-ID compliant driver's licenses and IDs on October 10th 2016, so everyone that has a current license/ID in The Republic should be good now...

Evidently some states have been upselling RealID as an extra $$$ add on, not the default, so those folks that chose the less expensive option the last decade are having to scramble now. (Presumably states that are doing two tier'ed driver's license options are doing so to allow issuance of licenses to illegal aliens.)

Between my Texas driver's license, my US Passport book and my US Passport card, I currently have 3 pieces of Real ID compliant identification.

This is true, when I got my Real ID, I was offered a regular four year license or the Real ID which was good for eight years at less than what two four years licenses would have cost.   This assumes that there would not be a price increase.   I chose the Real ID at eight years.   Upon moving to TN, my new license was issued for another eight years.   Seemed like to right thing to do then and now I'm positive of it.   No, I have no intent to travel by air in the near future but, could if I decided to without any ID issues.  Wink

Some states like OR didn't get their act together and offer a Real ID till this year.  They kept asking for more time to get it done.

I haven't gone down to DMV yet to get mine, nor has my DW.   We will wait till next year when our drivers' licenses expire to get one.  We are not planning on any airplane trips.  If we do have to fly, we have passports.

I also have three types of ID...the driver's license has had the little star for a number of years, first in Florida and then in Wisconsin when I moved here in '19. I also have a VA medical ID card with an ugly representation on it, plus my passport with a photo that you'd expect to see in the Post Office. One way or another, I'm getting on that fool plane.  Grin

If you look like your driver's license photo, see a doctor.

If you look like your passport photo, it's too late.

I have not looked into lines here in SC.  We did get our passports renewed (took about a week or so and done on line).

Will look at getting a SC Real ID in the future.  Have not heard any issues here in SC but.....

Actually I did joke with my doctor about the DL picture so he wanted to look at it...in the interest of science he said with an evil grin. Once in hand he started laughing and had to show it to his nurse. The whole office had a good laugh at my expense, but was all in good fun since I've known them all for some time and will have a chance to return the favor at the right time.  Wink

The Real ID is really simply a security verification thing for flying and entrance into federal facilities.   So, if you don't fly much or enter such facilities often, your pass port should be sufficient.

On the other hand, if convicted of a felony and sentenced to a federal prison, not having a Real ID might be a good thing, maybe they won't let you in....................  Ya Think?  Serk???   Wink

I'm never flying commercial again.   Angry

If I don't have Real ID and need it to enter Federal facilities, does that mean they can't haul me into federal court for a criminal prosecution?   Grin

When I renewed my Licence, I brought the paperwork to get the real ID.
This included my birth certificate with the raised seal from the city I was born in. They wouldn’t accept it because the certificate was issued from the hospital, not the city. This is the only birth certificate I’ve ever had. I went back home and searched for my passport. Found it, returned to the DMV and they took the passport and I got the ID.
Guess what I used for a birth certificate to get the passport, yup that same one.

Just like “just stay home for 2 weeks…you’ll be fine…” more gubmint bull crap….

We didn't have RealID compliant driver's licenses while we were still in NC, but when we went to get Kansas DL's we both got the RealID compliant version in September 2018, and when we renewed in 2024, the KS DMV just kept the realID going off our previous RealIDs. Mine next expires in 2029.

I don’t have a real id but not worried. If I need to get somewhere fast, I’ll just call up my buddie Donald, he’s always inviting me to come to Mar-a-Largo anyway.

I got my "starred" DL here in Florida many years ago. I commented to agent how about how much safer I felt now. I considered the  authentication to be a joke for what it was publicized to mean. A friend of mine "faked" it and was passed right on through the line. He has been dead for 5-6 years and was pretty much a rebel for any cause.

I did find it slightly ironic they chose a yellow star as the indicator in most states...

...kinda sad NO ONE involved in that decision had the gumption to say "Hold up. Using a yellow star as a form of government ID isn't really a look we wanna go with, is it? "

(And no, I'm not trying to draw a moral equivalency between the prior usage of a yellow star by a government and the modern one, just interesting that no one thought maybe that wasn't the best thing to use.)

I went with the real id the last license renewal. I don’t have a passport. The biggest reason for the Real ID is if I’m on the bike and something happens to me and/or the bike  I can fly home.

I find it ironic that we trust the Bureau of Motor Vehicles to handle this function.

When my wife received her Real ID from the BMV, they changed her middle name. It was not a name she had ever used, just randomly changed Anita to Ann.

My nephew, as administrator of his father’s estate, recently sold his father’s car to friend. All the paperwork was in order, including the Court issued Letters of Administration. The BMV refused to accept the documents and stated they would transfer the title only with an original signature of the deceased owner.

Ironic as that may seem, other than state issued driver's licenses I know of no other documents every (or most) folks have and carry with them.  Of course, birth certificates, passports and SS cards which most folks don't carry with them, what other form of ID is available?  I do wonder if unlicensed (no drivers license) individuals must have a government issued ID with their picture to fly or enter those federal government buildings?

Yes. I know The Republic issues a state ID, basically a driver's license in every way except it doesn't convey driving "privileges" ..... Always assumed all states do the same?

Is it safe to assume that such an ID would have a Star and be sufficient to board a commercial flight or enter federal buildings.   Curious minds want to know......................  Wink

I can only speak for a state issued ID from The Republic of Texas, but those are, if issued after October 10th 2016.

https://www.dps.texas.gov/section/driver-license/federal-real-id-act

The IDs look just like a driver's license, except instead of saying "DRIVERS LICENSE" in bold across the top they say "IDENTIFICATION CARD"

But, does it have a Star and is good for boarding commercial flights and entering Federal buildings?   Curious minds and all that ya know.  Wink
I would assume the same criteria would apply.

I presume it is as I flew to NC about 2 years ago.

My Florida DL has a white star in a goldish colored circle.
