Hi everybody. I wrecked my 99 tourer and after replacing the tach/speedo/ entire headlight assembly, I have a problem. When i start the bike in neutral, everything seems okay. I pull the clutch in and the engine runs fine. When I shift into first gear. the engine dies suddenly. EVEN WITH THE CLUTCH LEVER STILL IN. I am certain the clutch is still dis-engaging and all that. Only once I was able to start the bike in first gear with the clutch lever in. Thanks for you help.

Check your kick stand switch.

Yea, is the kick stand down? Get a new switch or cut it off and wire nut'm together.

There's a switch associated with the clutch too, could be that, maybe it's not plugged in solid...

If the kickstand switch does not indicate to the ecm that it is in the up position, it will kill the engine when you put it in gear.  Check the wiring to the switch first and make sure that when you put the stand up, it is closing the proper contacts, something may have gotten twisted underneath.

Check kickstand switch first.  Bypass it by tying together, and see if that solves the problem.  If it does, replace the switch, if not, problem elsewhere.

There is a connection under the seat that will allow you to check the sidestand switch, should be continuity from green to green/white in up position - an audible OHM meter works great for this as you can hook it up and then play with the switch and the beeper should sound any time the switch is closed.

It sounds as if you are having problems at least with the clutch switch circuit, and possibly also with the kickstand switch circuit IF your kickstand is up when the engine quits.  It could be that your clutch lever pivot is damaged or worn in such a way that it doesn't actuate the switch properly when you pull in the clutch.
