Since some of us on this board also own GL1800s, here's a follow up to my earlier post about cracks appearing in the rear portion of my F6B's front fender. When I removed it the damage was much worse than I thought. The part (Fender B) has 8 mounting points, 4 fender to forks, and 4 fender to caliper covers. 5 of the 8 were either cracked or completely detached! I'd never removed it as that's not necessary for a tire change. I never installed a mud guard, nor did the fender ever contact pavement or road debris. Colorado's rough pavement may have accelerated the damage, but it's simply a bad design by Honda. Plenty of GL1800 owners have complained about it on Goldwing message boards.

Unfortunately one of the mounting points had lost several chunks of plastic, which explains the little piece I found on the garage floor a few years ago. So repair would be a real challenge. Luckily I found a replacement in stock, in the right color, and it arrived yesterday.

While searching for the replacement I noticed that the part number hasn't changed over the years, except for the last 2 color code characters. So GL1800 owners might want to pull the caliper covers and check the condition of the rear-front fender. They still appear to be available but that won't last forever. I would have bought a replacement even if I had to repaint it.

The first repair I had to make to my 08 Wing when I did tire replacement. I removed the front fender and found a front mounting tab broken. Immediately I went to the trunk and discovered what that small chunk of plastic was in there for! Previous owners had saved it for me so I could fix my damaged fender that they failed to disclose to me. It fit perfectly and with the help of some jb epoxy it’s still holding on.

I now have a 2012 G L1800 already triked. How many miles y'all showin on yer respective rides? I have NO idea who But both side covers were sorta "repaired" with what looks like to me wood putty! I also noted how Flimsy both side covers are on the 1800. The Trike overall Is Solid and a Good RIDE! It is a bit north of 111 G on the clock. I haven't looked but as a W A G Honda as Proud of thast fender as they is bout those side covers!  crazy2 And THANKS fer the heads up!  cooldude RIDE SAFE.

My F6B has 68,000 miles. I've never had a problem so the fender cracks were a disappointment. Overall the GL1800's plastic seems flimsy compared to my Valks.

OTOH it's a wonderful motorcycle so I didn't hesitate to buy the replacement. The price was less than a rear tire so it could be worse. We all know what it's like to own a decades old bike with parts getting scarce. So if you own a GL1800 and want to keep it for a while, I'd pull the caliper covers and carefully inspect the rear part of the front fender for cracks. If it's starting to deteriorate you might consider finding a replacement.

Just to be clear, the Gen 6 Wings (18+)  have a different set up.

Not to say the plastic used in the new style Wing won't fail, just I haven't seen it yet.

JB Weld is wonderful stuff for this type of repair. cooldude

I'm thinking of using one of the J-B products (they make a bunch these days) to reinforce some of the mounting points on my new fender. The rear pair that attach the fender to the forks carry a lot of load, They had the most severe damage.
