The image below shows the route we traveled.

The ride from the hotel in Southport out to US 17 (Southport Supply Rd) was as expected, heavy traffic until we were about five or six miles out of Southport.  Then, as we got closer to US 17, the traffic on Southport Supply Rd got more reasonable.

When traveled South on SC 31 (AKA Carolina Bays Parkway) before rejoining US 17 South

US 17 was fairly busy and we actually continued on US 17 sort of bypassing the travel through Myrtle Beach but ending up getting back on US 17 traveling through the Garden City area and south toward Georgetown, SC.

Near Pawleys island they were doing some road work on US 17 South and traffic was restricted to one lane headed south.  Cars were backed up for a mile or so on US 17 South.  Why they were doing road work and closed down one lane on one of the busiest roadways in the area just before Memorial Day is a big question for me.

We took a detour around the “event” so, we did not see what the road work consisted of.  But it had traffic blocked up for several miles. Our detour did put us on a dirt road for a mile or so but it was not bad.

We continued on US 17 South and traffic was not that bad but still “well traveled”. To bypass around Charleston, SC, I routed us on I-520 South.  While that seemed to be a good idea at first, it turned out to be a bad choice.  I-520 South had some traffic problems.  Lost of traffic headed south.

But here is a nice part of that road.

The trip from US 17 to Beaufort was uneventful but there were some traffic issues that required attention to the road.  The videos below are of the more “rural” area of US 17 South.  Also known as the “Ace Basin Parkway”.

We decided to stay at the Best Western Sea Island Inn in Beaufort.  It was an older hotel right on Bay Street.  But it was convenient to all the areas we wanted to visit.  It only had two floors.  There was only “elevator” and it was designated for handicapped persons only.  But, the hotel was well maintained and clean and neat.

This is the video of our arrival.
