I have an apartment available. Sign in front of building. I receive a call and am asked if I speak Spanish.
I speak some and understand some.  B U T , I am in America. When in Mexico and Spain , I did my best to learn to converse.
She got extremely angry that I didn't speak Spanish. I knew most of what she was saying. She has her rights and demanded I speak her language.  I let her rattle for a bit and then hung up.

Irritates the hell out of me:

Press one for English, then be transferred to someone who can barely speak English.

And people wonder why I VASTLY prefer e-mail/text/instant messaging over a phone call......

I got that one time. I called 1-800-get help for a computer problem. I knew I was in trouble when a heavily accented speaker,"Dave", answered the phone.  After several minutes of could you repeat that and what did you say? I told him I needed to speak to someone that spoke English. His answer was But I speak English. My non PC reply was "Not very well and let me speak to an American English speaker."

As many already know, I just had a shop erected.   The crew arrived and I asked if any of them spoke English.  The team leader responder "NO ENGLISH" in a loud and annoyed voice.

In this situation, I felt like I had very few options, the crew came from North Carolina and if I stopped them due to the language barrier, my building would most likely stay on their trailer as they left.

I allowed them to continue but made the call to the company I purchased it from.   Asked if they were all "Legal".   Of course, the response was yes.  The crew worked hard and were experienced but I made sure to let the company know how frustrating it was that at least one didn't speak English.

Advised the company that I was considering another structure of the same type.   But, I wouldn't be getting it from them because of the non-English speaking crew.

While I served overseas, I did my best to learn the language of that country.   Korean was really difficult but, I tried.
