This morning is just so similar to what that morning was.

A beautiful morning, sun shining, not a cloud in the sky.

My kids were too young for school and were just finishing breakfast. I had the news on in the kitchen and a seemingly casual report of a plane hitting the first tower…and the rest is history.

Yep, still remember it like it was yesterday. Back on the old farm, picking tomatoes while Don was checking on the second cut of hay.
Saw Air Force One with two silver escorts accompanying it.
Circling the farm...
When I walked inside, a friend called and told me to turn on the TV.

Said my prayers this morning while on my walk, then we took the shuttle to the beach

Today on Surfside Beach the fire department had a stair climb at the Pier to honor 9-11

Since I already had done almost 5 miles walking I declined but got info to send a check to the fd

Showed a pic of the windshield of my Valk (the avatar on left) to a volunteer who turned out
to be the chief and he gave me a challenge coin

I tried to decline but he would not hear of it  Great group of folks.
And a Beautiful day indeed to think about the costs of freedom

Recent events have certainly overshadowed 9/11 remembrances' this year.

You are correct the events 9/11/2001 should NEVER be forgotten!

Especially, since the evil that was behind those attacks is still very much alive and well.

Quite possibly.

I believe that it will be remembered by history, but it's significance will diminish over time.

Last year my 10 yr old grand daughter was very interested in watching the documentaries about 9/11.

She watched them and learned, I was able to throw in my experience as well which made it more personal and real.

As a retired Paramedic/Firefighter and a Gulf War Vet I have some very strong feelings about the 9/11 attacks.

I can't watch any of those 9/11 documentaries without becoming emotional and she picked up on that.

I want to believe that she isn't the only child born well after 9/11 that has an interest in learning about what happened.

But I also realize that for them it is just history.

For those of us that lived it, 9/11 is our Pearl Harbor event.

The wounds created that day will never fully heal, until we take them to our grave.

Both of my parents lived through Pearl Harbor, I learned about it both from history books and their personal accounts.

While I realize the significance and the tragedy of the day, it doesn't hold a candle to those who "lived" it.

At the time of 9/11 - I had been off active duty (USN) since March 1, 1995 - with zero reserve time in a drilling unit since then. Still, I thought about the idea of volunteering to come back. A few things put that idea to rest.
1. the zero reserve time.
2. I had gone from 210 pounds when I left to about 250 pounds at that time - none of the uniforms I had would fit. Even 210 was more than the Navy would have wanted me at.
3. I had no warfare pin. At best - I would have been in some general unrestricted line officer billet, probably doing paperwork somewhere processing recruits / sailors with interupted service wanting back in.

I was out by 9-11 too Scott. I remained inactive reserve for 17.5 years, but they were never going to call me back on active duty (short of WWIII).

In my last years, I had creeped up to within 5-6lbs of my max allowable weight.  The joke was "I'm not overweight, I'm under-tall".

I was always a sprinter, not a distance runner.  My problem came when they doubled the annual PT testing run from 1.5 miles to 3 miles.  I had always been able to make my time in the 1.5mi run with no practice or running at all (just a lot of gasping), but when it went to 3mi, I had to get out and start practicing or I wasn't going to make it (pushing 40).

Whether you failed the weight standards or the running time, they put you in what we Air Force guys called the "fat boy program", and this was not a good thing for your career.   Grin
