Ten (10) or more years ago, when I was working on my “reloading” equipment and building a stockpile of ammunition, I was also looking for a way to target practice.  Not only to improve my aim but to verify the reloading process was working.

Well that sort of fell by the wayside. But now, today, I was considering going back in time and doing the above for real.

As part of my planning for target shooting I located several “ranges” in the area.  I visited a couple and was not real pleased with the equipment. So, I tried building my own stands.

I had packed this one I built in a “bag” that would allow me to easily transport it to the range. Here are pictures of the stand assembled.

My problem is I cannot remember a way of attaching a target.

One way might be to use tie wraps and a piece of foam board.  This would allow me to use “thumbtacks” to hold the paper target in place.  And the foam board is pretty stable.

Question.  Has anyone every used anything like this?  And if so, how did you mount the targets?

Oh, the stand is made of PVC pipe and there is no glue being used, it's all sort of “friction fit”.  And yes, the top bar was not added in the pictures.

The easiest way to attach targets to that would be tape.

And if you want a bit more stiffness use a cardboard backer for paper targets.

Or tape a cardboard backer to the frame, and staple or clamp* or close-pin the targets to it.

I used to use my computer printer to make targets (cheaper than store bought).  Copy, paste and print.

That PVC is not going to stand up to many bullet hits (or a shotgun).     Smiley

Use zip strips through one ear of a few of these to attach targets:

IMHO if you do a lot of shooting you'll blow the PVC away, but PVC is relatively inexpensive so...

Edit to add - You might wanna attach some at the bottom too, or get some fishing weights to attach to the bottom of the paper targets to keep 'em from blowing around too much.

A very excellent idea Jess and Serk.

And it brings back a memory.   So I will go and buy some clips and see what can be done.

Excellent ideas gentlemen.

Oh, regarding the PVC, as Serk said it's cheap.  Just need to buy a "length" and cut some spare parts.

Also, I was not considering using a shotgun, although I have several.

good idea using PVC,  would just use some cheap bar clamps and some cardboard to attach to the sides, then tape paper targets to the throw away cardboard backing behind the targets.  YES, do NOT use a rifle or shotgun too much since after a few bullet hits, we use to make 2x4 wooden stands and a 12 gauge shotgun does a number on a 2x4, much like if not be worse for sure on PVC.

At the end of the next election day gather up some of the political signs. They use plastic that is corrugated like cardboard. It is stiff, free and makes great backers.

The local outdoor range uses plastic poster board like you mentioned and use staple guns to affix the targets to the plastic boards.  Works pretty well.
