Microsoft and Honda have something in common: they both discontinue perfectly good products. Since we ride motorcycles over 20 years old, I suspect many of us still run Windows 10. After Microsoft rolls out the final update tomorrow you'll have a few options. You might upgrade to Windows 11, but millions of PCs don't meet Win 11's minimum hardware requirements. And many don't want to upgrade since there's a lot to hate about the OS.

You can also pay Microsoft $30 for a year of extended support. This isn't a bad option but it will not be offered to consumers after a year. Or you can go forward without support. Over time this gets risky as new exploits emerge.

I found another option when Microsoft pulled the plug on Windows 7: 0patch, a product of ACROS Security in Europe. They security adopt orphaned Microsoft software, and still support Office 2010/13/16/19, Win 7, and Server 2008/12. And they'll support Windows 10 for at least 5 years. If you plan to hang on to Windows 10 you might want to check them out at 0patch.com

While not exactly similar, I switched to a MacBook computer let's say 5 or 6 years ago.  Prior to that I was using Windows 7.  I was also using Microsoft Streets and Trips on my Microsoft Computer for route planning.

So, when I switched to the MacBook I also found some software called VMWare that allowed me to run Windows 7 on my MacBook.  That was well and good until a few months ago when my MacBook screen died and I had to get a new MacBook and the new operating system would not let me use VMWare (new chips in the device).

My iMac still has the older Apple chip set and it still runs VMware and runs Windows 7.

So there are other options out there.

Linux.

For those of you who slave away all day long using Microsoft
proprietary software to get your job done, linux will not work.

For the rest of you who, like me, use your computer to
stare at the Internet through a web browser, it will be a giant
upgrade.
