Just got an 2001 I/S.  Went to take off, still too cold, and killed the engine.  It would not attempt to start until I put it in neutral.  Kickstand was up.

Shouldn't it start with kickstand up, in gear, clutch pulled in?

As soon as I put it in neutral, it started fine.

All the Valkyries "shoud" start as you described.  Your bike might have been setting to the point that the contacts need to be cleaned, and there are several.  Sometimes the kickstand spring in the switch will not have enough force to open that circuit.  Sometimes the clutch needs adjusted.  I would also make sure the battery is fully charged.

Starts real good, fires right up as soon as put in neutral.  So, do not believe it is a kickstand switch problem. Is there a switch on the clutch, that lets it start with the clutch pulled, verses not starting in gear?

Yes, there is a clutch switch. It's right up there on the handle. It's common for it's tip to wear down and ALSO for the bushing in the clutch lever to wear to the point where it won't activate the switch. It could also be unplugged.

Easy to check out.

With the engine off, and in a relatively quiet setting... pull in the clutch and listen.  You should hear a faint/mettalic "ping" or "click".  If you do NOT hear it... then the clutch switch needs replaced.  It's about a $7 part and takes about five minutes to change out... a bit longer if you take the time to do a little cleaning, schmooieing, and such.

Thanks.  I will check the switch when I get a chance.  I put the gl1800 wide adjustable levers on, and they come with a new bushing, so that should not be it.

I put the wide chrome levers on to. Found that they had just a slight bind in them and would not return quite all the way. A little emery cloth and clean and a regrease the pivot pin and all was well.
If that is the problem make sure you do not remove to much as to shorten the life of the bushing.

Now we just got the problem.

You have to trim those GL1800 levers just a tad to get everything in that clutch switch to work.        It is a lot easier to diagnose when we get all the changes, mods and or etc.      Mainly the last thing ya did before it failed.    LOL      angel

Had no problem with the ones I put on my 97.  I will check it out though.  If I push the lever open, then try to start, that should tell me?

What I should do is just bypass the switch.  Then could start in gear.  Since it is a sidecar rig, cannot fall over!  LOL

It is just a little ridge up by the bolt hole....   I'm assuming the ones you got were like mine.

It doesn't let the lever fully push the switch in when pulled.

My 97 never needed it either, but the set we put on my biddies 2000 we had to trim.    Only have to trim 1 lever.    Who knows maybe my brass bushing was worn enough to not bother..      Wouldn't know now as it is back stock.    Grandson knocked it over Christmas day and broke the end off of the clutch lever.    No, he didn't get his arse warmed up.    He is only 7, and between his dad and I we can not figure out how the 4377 he knocked MGM over.

Like was said, listen for the switch click. You may have to adjust the lever setting, depending on what grips you're using.  I had a cranky switch once. I enlarged the mounting screw hole, so I could slightly move the switch closer to the lever.  That worked for me.

I checked, the switch does click.  And I can get it started in gear now.  I believe the problem was cold.  I was outside at aobut 10 degrees.  Switch may be a little sticky too.  When warmed up in garage, works, but do need to fully pull in the clutch lever.
