Are those rear fender racks that curve over the fender and replace the passenger seat good for carrying anything,
or are they just for looks? Any pictures of stuff being carried on one?

I can tell you they are VERY UNCOMFORTABLE if you have to sit on one as a passenger.  Ihad a valve stem blow out one night on a local ride.  A friend with a solo'd Valk and one of them rack things gave me a lift home and even though I wrapped my jacket around it it was very hard.  I suppose if you have rope or bungees you could but just about anything on there...weight is not limited like trunk racks are.  hard flat items like boxes may take some creative tie down engineering because these things are curved to match the fender

Carl won a pad that looked very strange at Cheaha once , and I figured out that is was manufactured as a pillon pad that fit one of those solo racks you are talking about.

But it really was a mystery prize at first.

Joe uses one for luggage all the time on BdMOJO

And they simply look good , Bling Bling is always good.

Check out how Strider loads up when traveling.  He has that solo pad.

I haven't had a chance to load mine up yet.   Got it for my birthday and then this white stuff started coming and it hasn't stopped since October 12th I think it was.

I figured I could put my duffle bag there and strap it on.

I opted to put the Mustang fender bib on before the rack (extra layer of protection).  I've had it loaded down with bike luggage... and, at one locale in Canada once... took a waitress for a long evening ride on it... she grabbed a pillow to sit on.  The rack/fender was fine.

Absolutely. Since I ride/travel solo, I removed the rear seat and sissy bar. Then did what Ratdog has done...put a fender bib on before bolting the rack down. I only have that rack on when traveling. I also have the Hondaline luggage rack that sticks out behind the sissy bar mount, and I made a flat cruiser bar to go where that sissy bar went. Now, when I travel the luggage rack, cruiser bar, and the fender rack are all on the same level so I can strap my bag down flat and whatever else I choose on there. I like that better than having it sticking up in the air when strapped to the backrest.

Mike, the main thing (besides bling) that is good about them is to protect your paint.  I bungied a big soft leather bag on the fender for Inzane in Johnson City, and it still rubbed the paint petty good.  A mustang fender bib is cheaper and does the same thing.  Of course, if the bag you tie on the rack is soft and hangs over the sides onto the fender and bags, it can still rub the paint.

I bungee a Hopnel bag to mine.  It's teardrop shaped in profile and has expandable pockets on each side.  It fits perfectly between the rear of the seat and solo grab bar.  I keep the Cycle Pump, Pocket Plugger, EZ Gauge, GPS, Camera, Honda Spray, micro fibers, etc in it for easy-on / easy off.

I'm pretty sure that the Show Chrome solo fender rack is discontinued...   Sad

All the Honda bag and trunk racks can still be had, but Honda never made a solo rack.  That was only Show Chrome/Big Bike Parts, and they are no longer made... for a few years.  You cannot substitute a short Show Chrome bag rack (four point mount) for a solo rack (two point mount): not without drilling four holes in the fender.

If my rememberer is working good... a buddy of mine accidently bought a Show Chrome solo rack for a VTX... but, with a little enginuity and some finaglin'.... we got it to work.  It's been quite a few years now, so I don't recall what all we had to do... but, it worked and was on his '00 Tourer for quite a while with no troubles.

LOL  No... but she did work in the restaurant at the Valhalla Inn... and I do remember her name.   Evil  I put Joanie on the back of Deerslayer's Valk for a ride the day before.  She's a good girl on the back.  Just settled in and I never even knew she was on the bike as I was flogging corners.  She just grinned and enjoyed it.  She's got her own riding gear too.

Mine has come in quite handy over the years. Been riding solo set up for some time.

Fairly recently picked up the once made Rivco rack vs the Showchrome. The Rivco rack runs flat instead of the curved. The curved version seems to flow better when empty, mine is seldom empty.

The Showchrome finish I thought was poor and definitely not "show" chrome quality.

As mentioned earlier, the fendor bib is run under the rack but as with all tank and fendor bibs, over time it will show wear on the paint. I got over it an realized the functionality of the rack and looks of the bib had a greater priority in lieu of the hidden wear marks.

I have even done the rack with the rear sissy bar and luggage rack for larger loaded up runs.
This shot with sissy, fender rack and luggage rack on the way to Inzane 6 (Twin Lakes area)

Fender rack & luggage rack (Monument Valley - UT)

Fender rack only (Crystal Lake res Pikes Peak, CO area)

Rivco rack, also no longer made.  Sad

Showchrome?  I think not! Embarrassed

I did use mine and it came in quite handy. I too would mount it over the fender bib. I also use the solo seat rail, or basket as some call it. That combo works well to lash gear up snug to the back of the seat rail. I do regret selling it, I did not care for the "fit".

Yours is the very one I'm sweating over right now  Wink ...

I just went over to JCW, and they indeed have a show chrome rack that comes up when you
search for "Valkyrie Fender Rack"... of the three reviews, two people are talking about
using the rack on an Ace...  The one Valkyrie review isn't very flattering:

"If you have a Valk and you have another choice for a fender rack, look at the other choice. This rack though good in construction and very nice chrome does not fit my 99 Valk very well. The front mount needs to be curved instead of a flat design. The mount actually presses down on the crown/curve in the fender behind the rear seat. This means the mount can not set flat against the fender. The pressure is all on the crown of the fender. The rear bolt is directly under the racks chrome bars which makes it difficult to tighten do to very tight clearances. The rack does curve nicely (but this causes issues) from front to back over the fender and is very heavy duty (strong). The rack is a bit small in both length and width, but somewhat usable. The front to back curve mentioned above is so great it makes it difficult to carry anything flat. The rack looks good but isn't as functional as I had hoped."

Does this sound like yours?

It sounds similar to my rack but I honestly never had any problem or complaints with mounting it.  I would say weigh all the opinions, not just one guy.  Most here who posted on this thread seem to be pretty happy with theirs.

I'm guessing that yours really is made for a Valkyrie, and fits good, and I'm guessing that the one at JCW is
really made for a VTX (or a Rebel or a CMX (whatever that is)).... anywho... hope to be talking to you soon  cooldude

Mike there were always complaints on the rack for Valk being a bit tricky to mount, but it mounts.  I'm pretty sure the JCWhitney racks are not for Valk.  Since they have been out of production for some time; most sites where it can still be found listed do not actually have any left in stock.  I chased mine down used last year, and will only mount it for a trip since I like bare paint back there otherwise.

The best (actually functional) solo racks ever made were  from Custom World International (Querbec); see the style on the far right (curved mount, flat top, with plenty of places to bungee).  I put one on my wife's 1100 V*.  Cost is steep, and so is shipping (Doc in FL on our VRF forum is a US dealer for them).  You'd have to call to see if either of the four listed for Honda would fit Valk.  Just FYI

I have a very cheap (but the right color of red) trunk similar-to-but-not-as-nice-as a Givi I might try to
mount like that for trips... assuming I end up with a rack... my saddlebags were packed full on that five

FYI,
I know you were watching my rack on ebay.  They deleted my auction because I put the words "Like New" in the listing.  So I had to relist it today.  Just in case you were wondering.

Check it out - when it rains it pours... here's a similar one that's flat, not curved, that just showed up...
seems to include a (BBT?) solo bar... anyone know what brand rack this is - got any editorial remarks
about fitment or whatever?
