I'm on my third plastic chrome alternator cover in 18 years on two Valks. Chrome doesn't hold up with the heat I guess. Has anyone ever offered a metal alternator cover for the Valk?

OEM should have done this because I see the chrome failing on many bikes. Not sure how to avoid it. Any suggestions?

As for mine, I pried off as much of the fake "chrome" as I could and rattle can'ed it matte black, but my Valk is never gonna be a show bike...

Also some folks say putting heat shielding on the inside of an OEM one can make it last longer without bubbling. No first hand experience just thing I've heard.

It's usually caused by gas leaking on the cover when disconnecting the fuel line to remove the tank. I always cover it with rags when I remove the tank.

SERK is right. I installed heat shielding under it and it's held up very well.

Mine peeled in 14' and one of our members had 2 extra @ $65 a each before all vendors started charging exorbitant prices. I added insulated firewall blanket to it and the rear MC cover. 20,000 mi. w/o issue. Seemed to become issue for a lot folk in that time frame and before.

All I can say is it lasted long enough to get past its warranty.   All manufacturers do this.   In this case, the chrome lasted much longer but nothing produced by mankind lasts forever.   Wished it did.
