A friend of mine is purchasing a used, but refurbished, 2022 Club Car Onward (electric powered) from a local dealer.  The reason for the purchase is two fold.  He has determined that he and his wife, as they get older, might need some way to move around their property (sort of "country" property) besides "walking".

Some kind of All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) was suggested to allow movement as they got older and might not be able to easy walk around the property and move some smaller items from place to place.

Since they live in a small town, which has several "amenities", they would also like to be able to take the Club Car Onward into town instead of driving a car two miles round trip.  There in lies the problem.

The state in which they live allows Gulf Carts on streets and roads that are speed limited to 35 MPH.  The road on which they would travel to town for shopping (visit Food Lion, local Pharmacy, local hardware store, etc) is not heavily traveled.  But, there is some traffic.   And its speed is limited to 35 MPH, or less, for the entire trip.

The top speed of the Club Car Onward they have in mind is about 15 MPH (what the dealer said).  I have done some basic research for them and found that the speed of the Club Car Onward they are looking at  is actually limited to between 8 and 12 MPH by a "speed" sensor connected directly to the cart's drive motor.

During this research, I also found the following:  Golf cart speed limits:  For instance in California, golf carts are limited to a maximum speed of 15 miles per hour. Additionally, they can only be operated on roads with speed limits of 25 mph or less unless modified to be classified as low-speed vehicles (LSVs), which can go up to 25 mph.

So, it appears that the Club Golf Cart can be modified to be qualified as a LSV with a top speed of 25 MPH which would be much better as far os "other traffic" is concerned.

The process looks too simple (replace the motor speed sensor with one programmed differently) to be true.

My question:  Has anyone here done this, had it done, knows what the process really is?

Thanks for reading.

I have continued my research and seems I was sort of "right" in that the change might be as simple as changing the controller.

I found this link in my search.

https://extremekartz.com/products/club-car-precedent-onward-tempo-iq-navitas-controller-kit-600-amp-or-440-amp

Cost might be around $800.

Will forward the link to my friend.

But if you have another solution or know of a potential "down side", please let me know and I will forward it to my friend.

Besides this dealer, the obvious place to seek information and advice about golf carts is the local golf courses.  They will know all about local laws on use, and probably know about mods to increase speed or performance, and be able to advise on the best cart for your friend's intended use/purposes.  I'd be looking to talk with the service manager, not some kid wrench turner.

Valuation, (maybe) repairs, parts too.

They may have an opinion that the brand of cart your friend is looking at is a poor choice.  They may have carts for sale.  And like any other business, they may be advising in their own self interest.

If it was me, I'd be trying to get something that didn't require me to get tags, registration, and insurance (government regulation), but that may not be possible for intended street use.

All manner of goofy gas and electric carts, minibikes, skateboards and scooters go blasting around my neighborhood (10-30 over the limit) with no plates (and probably no drivers license by most).  My 40 something backyard neighbor has one of those battery single wheel skateboards he rides to work 10-15 miles away.  He's all armored up with full face helmet like an imperial storm-trooper, and does mostly walks and trails, but has to run a few streets (illegally I think).

Another neighbor friend has a nice new lithium powered scooter he says will do 60-70, and one of these days I'm going to see if I can ride it around without killing myself.   Grin

Just wait till the Golf carts hit the road in numbers, what a pain trying to get somewhere.

Golf courses are not the place to go for information. We have a golf cart repair shop in the area and if you have one in your area that would be the place to go. There are a couple of carts here that do 50 to 60.

I have no need for a golf cart, but one of those peppy little battery scooters would be fun around the neighborhood, and I could keep it strapped to a wall in my big van for a breakdown, or just riding around trails, parks or other places I drive it to.

I have very little knowledge about golf carts of any kind except some are electric and some are gas. My suggestion would be to pull that electric motor out and put a Valkyrie motor and transmission in it. That’ll get you where you wanna go in no time maybe before the ball lands.   crazy2

M'be something here might be insightful.....as mentioned above (brakes) will this particular cart be safe at higher speeds?   Could be interesting.

Good Point.  I will make sure he checks that out.

In the searching I did for him, I did not see that as a "question", but its sound.

Thanks.  In all the searching I did yesterday I did not see that article.  I will send him the link as well.

Seems to be spot on to his question.

Just for the record his is a 2022 Onward Lifted 4 Passenger cart
