It was possibly the nicest day of the week today. I’m making my weekly trek to my mother’s tomorrow as the forecast says I have a window. My wife is cooking up some viddles for her to eat on this coming week so it’s imperative we get them to her tomorrow. She wouldn’t starve without what Judy is preparing but she looks forward to some home cooking every week. Mother doesn’t cook anymore since it’s just her, and her favorite quick meal is Jimmie Dean croissant with sausage, egg and cheese which is a 2-21//2 minute microwave away. As long as her power stays on she’s good, and we’re not forecast for any ice. These are all things I never gave a second thought to 20 years ago. My immediate family spans from 4 1/2 years to 97 years old so there is always other people to consider and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Once I get home tomorrow night, I plan to hunker down and wait for the big thaw. cooldude

One angle I saw mentioned elsewhere, usually this sort of event hits one or two southern states, and the others will send their linemen to the effected area to help out.

Might be a problem if all those areas get hit at once...

gotta look on the bright side right?  Negative 16 here now outta make some lakes freeze solid to go ice fishing?  The local lakes due to it being off and on lately upper 40s and heavy rain and higher winds has opened up a lot of spots open water being unsafe to walk on this winter.  Seems like this global warming thing past decade or more might be onto something?  who knows, in 20 more years there maybe NO ice on local lakes to go ice fishing?

Jess, get it while the getting is good.    cooldude

Rams

I got out for a nice 3hr ride Ron.   cooldude

Chilly, but no wind and mostly bright sun.

But the Bozos had already sprayed that chloride crap all over the roads (no snow till Sunday, if at all) so I had a great big cleanup job when I pulled in.   tickedoff
They did the same here in Houston.  Sprayed that crap all over the overpasses and elevated roadways, yesterday.  The possibility of ice isn't until Sunday morning.
Will they need to retreat them Saturday afternoon to do any good?

Signed:  I don't know anything about ice......

We don't get much snow in NoVA.  It's snowed 3-4 times this year (more than usual), a dusting to an inch, and gone tomorrow or the next day.

I checked the weather this morning, and they are calling for 5-8 inches Sunday, 100% probability.   tickedoff

I have a good Toro 5hp paddle snowblower (not a big bladed one).  They are worthless in slushy snow, and even nice powder is usually more easily and quickly cleaned with my Stihl 600 backpack blower.

So I have rarely used it, often for years.  Accordingly, it is in the very back of my 10X12 shed.  I decide I better get it out and running.  I think about putting it off until tomorrow (procrastinating), but it will be frigid tomorrow.

So out I go and have to pull out nearly everything on the floor to get it out of there (giant leaf sucker, mowers, blowers, gas cans).  It's really crummy in the back, so I clean it out.  I am putting off the expected rope pulling until I dislocate my shoulder since it hasn't run in 4-5 years.  I should check the plug, but you have to remove bodywork to do it, so nope.

Good fresh 2-stroke treated gas, and the SOB fires up after only 6-7 pulls.  Yayyy!!

I let it run until it's hot.  I spray the paddles and undercarriage with PAM which helps with sticky snow and ice.  I get out my coal and flat shovels.  My snowmobile suit and big rubber boots are ready.  Let the war begin.  The Boy Scout motto is "Be Prepared."

Gee it would be nice if the weather people are wrong (again).    Grin

First, they hit us with 6 to 8 inches of snow, followed by a quarter to half an inch of ice, and then another 4 to 5 inches of snow. Joyful joy...

I cut wood today I have to cut the rest of the tree tomorrow Ran out of room...
I have 4 loads to split...

We’re forecasted for Sunday through Monday morning up to 12” plus about 1/4” of freezing rain late Sunday into Monday.

I don’t mind the snow depth, it’s the ice that concerns me. I’d rather 16” of snow and no freezing rain.

Ya' know it's gonna be a serious one, they've broken out the big guns here in The Republic...

My outside faucets have their insulators on. Tring to explain the seriousness of covering same for new home owner Kali...

Never seen an above ground main water shutoff valve before, seems like a REALLY bad idea, but trying to make her understand it's VERY important they get better insulation and a cover over that thing before Friday...

Trying to convince my parents (10 minutes away in nice weather) to come over here Friday morning and stay during the event, but they're reluctant to do so.

Their power went out in the last big one, and there's multiple bridges between my house and theirs. One can learn to drive in snow, one can't drive on ice.

Be safe ya'll!

that BBQ sauce spreading reminds me of what they do, no joke, here in southern WI the DOT lays down the waste/brine of all the cheese factories nearby us to help prevent the roads from freezing as much.  I guess it works to some degree but sorta smells like a cheese factory.  Too bad is not cheese curds though love them little suckers.   Am sorta surprised do not see more critters on the roads licking the salt brine, etc. off the roads having a feast.    2funny

The best news for me is that the weather guessers have reduced the predicted snow and ice from 5-8 inches, down to 3-5 inches.  Those people always seem to over-predict precip of any kind around here.

I'm not as worried about precip as I am power loss and less snow and ice means less chance of power loss.

I just braved the cold to run up to my little grocery at opening; good thing, it was already a madhouse.

On my way out, I took the road leading to the main drag (I usually don't take), and all the main power lines for my big neighborhood feed in along it, and man they do not look good.  All droopy and full of splices and evidence of many past repairs.  A tree went over on them right there just last year and we lost power for 3-4 days.

I desperately do not want to have to drag out my big generator and back power the house for heat.  I have the gas to run for days if I have to.

It will be below freezing for a solid week, and the precip snow and ice starts at midnight and will be nonstop for 20 hours.   Undecided

So far in the Tulsa area we have about 1" on the ground.  Last I heard we were supposed to get up to 14".  I prepared the snowblower and generator yesterday but I'm beginning to think we won't be needing them.  Hopefully anyway.  The wife was disappointed though she was excited to go make a snowman but that's not gonna happen today.  Maybe tomorrow we'll see.

We're (latest) predicted for 4-7 inches of snow (already have the 4 inches from overnight), the rest depends on a second wave coming through - and it may not ! OTOH - it is COLD - woke up to -2F outside, and its not much better than 2F right now (1118 CST). I have no intentions of going outside short of a medical emergency.Maybe if the power goes out, but we're not predicted to get freezing rain.

Just got started here about an hour ago. Very fine, almost ice crystals falling, I suppose the big flakes will show up sooner or later if we get anything like the forecast. But at least the weather men got the temperature forecast right! I’m not complaining, the shelves are stocked, the hvac is doing its job, and it will be a while before I run out of propane. The wife made a fine pot of vegetable soup earlier and I’ve already sampled that. I pray that the less fortunate have found a place to keep warm and fed, it’s not a time to be roaming the streets, unless you are in Minneapolis of course.

Well, if this works out the way most of these weather extremes do, next September we’ll see a huge increase in birth announcements.

As I previously said, be prepared with “all” necessary safety features.

Stay safe, while I no longer have livestock to care for, I honestly can not think of a reason to go out and fight Mother Nature.   We have similar conditions at my home snow followed by sleet, more snow, freezing rain most of last night and predicted to continue much of today.

I have the equipment to clear my sidewalks and driveway but Pushing Snow to only have ice to form on a cleared driveway is a waste of time and adds to the problem.

Maybe this evening I’ll fire up the Kubota and try but I suspect tomorrow would be the best time to get it done.   As I said, stay safe, make good decisions during this inclement WX.

Saw pictures of ice storm in Mississippi this morning, they were saying 1/2” on the trees. They were popping and snapping while the weatherman was talking. Worst news was close to 500,000 without power over about 4 states. So far it’s mostly on the Kentucky Tennessee boarder counties but as it moves eastward and upward, I have to stay in close contact with my Mother, I might have to make a trek to get her, or find some firewood for her fireplace. Since her hospital stay 14 months ago she gave up of using firewood which is even more understandable now that she uses a walker most of the time. We weren’t suppose to get any ice to speak of but they keep “updating” the forecast by the hour!

John and anyone else considering traveling in these conditions,

I fully understand your concerns but before you make that trip consider calling the local sheriff and ask for a Health and Welfare check.    They will get to her home long before you could and ensure she is warm and safe until you get there.
Not trying to dissuade you from that trip, just be careful.

This was a new one for us, had ice/sleet/snow piled up on against the back door. We never had anything like that even in the Snowmageddon of 2021...

KK and I went around and cleared it out so the dogs could get out to do their business. And play in it. Mostly play in it (German Shepherds are built for this and love it)

The spousal unit had an overnight shift at the hospital Friday night. They put her up for the day Saturday to sleep, fed her, etc then she had another shift last night.

She was supposed to be off work for tonight (Sunday night) but they've had so many folks not able to make it in they made a generous $$ offer for her to stay at the hospital today, get some rest, and do a bonus shift tonight.

As predicted, No VA snowed/frozen sleeted all night.

5-8 inches predicted is about right at 6am, but it just keeps coming, and now it's all ice.  Heavy snow doesn't throw very far, so 5-8 inches becomes 10-12 inches as you keep making passes to clear the walks and driveway (back and front).

Did my 2.5 miles on the treadmill in the dark, donned the snowmobile suit, gortex gloves, hat and mucklucks and out the door at 8am.  I hoped to use the 600 Stihl backpack blower, but no dice with heavy icy snow, so snowblower it was (good thing I drug it out and got it running beforehand).

Paced myself to avoid heart attack, taking breaks to rest.  At least the wind wasn't bad so the 17-20 degrees was tolerable, but it froze my drinking water.  I like to work but I haven't worked this hard in a long time.  Did all the way around my corner lot and some of each neighbor's walks too, and cleared the wide area which is the biggest bus stop for the kids in the neighborhood.

In the past, when it wasn't so much snow, I'd clear a single path up the drive along the car to front door to multiple neighbors, but I was worn out.  I walked over and looked at the drive of a 75yo lady and her disabled daughter across the street, and there is no way she can get her car out, so I drug that blower over and did her driveway too.  She won't be going anywhere but we won't get above freezing all week.

That last job got me so worn out I flopped on a big bench I have (until the heart attack feeling left).

It's disappointing to have all the area you've cleared covered in snow again, but at least it's an inch (so far) instead of a foot.

I'm indoors and drinking coffee, and will have some breakfast in a while.  (I can never eat before work)

Now if we don't lose power life will be good.

This precip will not stop until this evening.  I may need to go out there again, BUT I DON'T WANT TO!!

Did I mention how much I hate Winter?

The spousal unit had an overnight shift at the hospital Friday night. They put her up for the day Saturday to sleep, fed her, etc then she had another shift last night.

She was supposed to be off work for tonight (Sunday night) but they've had so many folks not able to make it in they made a generous $$ offer for her to stay at the hospital today, get some rest, and do a bonus shift tonight.

I think that’s a good way to handle the situation. Hopefully things were not too crazy in the hospital and she gets home safely.

Just finished clearing my driveway and all the parking area concrete at my house.   There’s a lot of concrete here. Was just over six inches deep and that includes about a half inch of ice on top.    I could walk on top of that snow/ice and it didn’t give.   Got the Kubota out and had to use the FEL to break it up before I could push it off the driveway.    While I do realize everything is relative, I have obviously been living in the south log enough to be acclimated.   My toes are frozen.

Probably did it a day too soon but it shouldn’t be that big a deal to do it again if needed.

At least you got to do it in a big self propelled machine, and not with a little non self propelled (push until hernia) machine.  In light snow, the blower paddles will pull the machine along, but in heavy icy stuff, you got to lean into it (for hours).

All my work is again covered.  Screw going out there again.  I closed all the curtains instead.  Grin

BTW, get some "smart wool" socks and your feet will thank you.

Was getting stir crazy, so I loaded up the kiddos who wanted to go and went in search of BBQ...

Luckily, this being Texas, even though Amazon has halted deliveries, school is canceled until at least Wednesday, hospitals are keeping their staff on site, etc.... We had several options for BBQ joints that were opened anyway...

Priorities people... Priorities...

The active traction control on a modern vehicle (VSA (Vehicle Stability Assist) on my 2006 Acura, I don't know if that still counts as modern) is really impressive. When it's on, I can't make it break the tires loose, even on pure white stuff... Floor it, jerk the wheel around, whatever and it just corrects it and keeps us going safely... Turned it off just for S&G and yup, driving on REALLY slippery stuff out there! Turned it back on and all was groovy...

KK, however, does not have a Vehicle Stability Assist button...

Anyway... Hope ya'll are doing well, and finding the joy in the situation best ya'll can...

I decided to just hibernate today - went outside to put out and pickup the outside neighborhood cats food, and take a full trash bag to the trashbin (because it would begin to smell in a couple days). We aren't going to see temps above freezing until NEXT SUNDAY - and I have to go to the dentist tomorrow (possible tooth work (again)). I swear the only thing that goes into your mouth that I haven't had is IMPLANTS - and that maybe before I finally die..... (if I live long enough).

About 4.5 inches of snow, and temps barely over 10 above (low tonight is forecasted for -7)
