Ya' know it's gonna be a serious one, they've broken out the big guns here in The Republic...

My outside faucets have their insulators on. Tring to explain the seriousness of covering same for new home owner Kali...

Never seen an above ground main water shutoff valve before, seems like a REALLY bad idea, but trying to make her understand it's VERY important they get better insulation and a cover over that thing before Friday...

Trying to convince my parents (10 minutes away in nice weather) to come over here Friday morning and stay during the event, but they're reluctant to do so.

Their power went out in the last big one, and there's multiple bridges between my house and theirs. One can learn to drive in snow, one can't drive on ice.

Be safe ya'll!

Please keep that stuff down your way Ron.   Grin

Though normal prevailing winds will bring it my way, unless it peters out (here's hoping).

The at and below freezing all day here is bad enough without precip.

It may be 55 tomorrow afternoon and I might even get in a short ride.  Maybe.

---------

I've never seen or heard of those outdoor shutoffs Brian.

Mine are indoors; shut them off inside, unhook the hose and open the outside valve to drain any remaining water.  Two of my three were just made brand new two days ago (the third done a while back).

Already some isolated road closures in Kentucky. Roads are covered just 20 miles north of me with jackknifed trucks etc on I75 and I64. And it’s not bad yet!!??

Jess, thinking of you and a few other friends I have already gone out and checked my barbed wire fences and gates trying to stop this cold front from making its way up to you.

Crud.

I'm glad I live where it doesn't get like this often.

It is looking like a couple of days glassed over with solid ice,
busted trees and failing powerlines are on the way.

I'm charging the batteries in my two generators. Together
they provide four 20 amp circuits.

I wish I had a chimney. That's something to prioritize
one day soon... at least I don't need a porch anymore  cooldude ...

Rumor has it that between TN and MS there are sufficient snowplows to address this but, most of the equipment is Mule Powered.

Planning on extending my in house time this weekend.   2funny

One angle I saw mentioned elsewhere, usually this sort of event hits one or two southern states, and the others will send their linemen to the effected area to help out.

Might be a problem if all those areas get hit at once...

Should the worst of the predicted Wx occur, there will be significant power issues  in the affected areas which will severely affect those power grids.   This is why I will be taking the PTO finish mower off of my Kubota tractor and coupling up the PTO Generator today or tomorrow after the rain stops.

And, checking my fuel cans to ensure they are all full.   It’s definitely better to be over prepared than under prepared for situations like this.    Am I very worried about survival?  No.   But I have experienced situations similar to this and have learned the hard way that prepping is a much more comfortable option.   smitten

Brian, that above ground piping is a back flow preventer for an irrigation system, or at least I think that is what it is.
It should definitely be covered, maybe with a bucket and a drop light.  Those are VERY EXPENSIVE to repair/replace.

Ahhhhh! Thanks for that, I updated 'em. Still need to get it taken care of, but not the main water shutoff for the whole house. That makes more sense!

Only planning on 3-5 inches snow Friday / saturday, - BUT -  temps are going to e HIGHs in the single digits if not colder. Generator is sitting INSIDE the shop, battery on continous charge. The only problem I possibly see coming is getting the gennerator running on propane in those cold temps. even at the worst and we lose power / generator won't start - we still have a NG powered space heater in the basement that should easily keep that space warm.

Good luck everyone. We got hit with some major windage up here in Iowa, Neb. and S. Dakota. Sioux City recorded a gust of 68 mph this afternoon. Wind is blowing over a number of semis in the area. Then Friday we get to see a high of -4 degrees. Hope the icing down south isn't too bad. Lot easier to deal with just snow.

To those that have electrically lit gas appliances, don’t forget to have matches handy.

Hopefully the small amount of prep I have done was a waste of effort but what I did do needed to be done anyway.   I took two empty fuel can and got them filled with diesel.  IMHO, not a huge overreaction.   Will need that fuel later on anyway.  Wink

yah,  ICE and high winds and bitter COLD temps suck, hope you all do not get the ICE they claim might get.    My kids house pipes burst a few years ago wokeup middle of night heard water gushing in from garage, down basement steps and completely flooded the entire basement flooring 4-5 inches high all over before realizing it shutting down the water main.  What a mess, they hired someone to clean it all up thank god did not ask us to help.  Been thru in 1990s a flooded basement floor 2 inches high when my sump pump failed after very heavy rains coming home to a complete 2 day cleaning up process, what a mess.

We are only going to get bitter cold temps negative 20 to 40 windchill with temps neg 6 to 10 below zero, not too bad.

We're going to see similar numbers - but we're not used to THAT MUCH cold !!! For us, it should be a bitter cold and snow (6 inches , more or less) event. I've got some running to do this morning, orchestra rehersal this evening, and then probably stay home where it's WARM. Thank god it doesn't look like a freezing rain event here, but for those of you who are expecting that - take care - and stay away from downed power lines.

I thought you retired?

OSS, I live at about 800' above sea level and the temp went down to 2'.

In the Pioneer Valley (Connecticut River) it was showing temps in the minus.

Looks like Sunday will be the event day for us in the NE and a nor-easter may be what we get.

For the most part people up here know how to deal with winter storms and are ready come November, at least the country volks are.

My brother lives in GA and stated the "freak out" is in full force.

Gonna get into the teens here in my area around Houston.  That is really cold for here.  Instead of manual dripping of outside faucets I went to Lowes and bought 4 of these new "Freeze Misers" that you screw onto your faucet and turn faucet wide open and the colder it gets the more the faucet drips.   My brother in law swears by them.  We will see.

I'm not saying everyone / anyone is doing a "freak out" about the cold that's coming (it's just "unusually cold" for this area, but not unknown), 6 inches of snow is hardly worth talking about (24 is a bit different matter), and when we get the snow combined with the winds from the storm - near zero visibility is pretty common. That's why my plan is what I stated - get prepared, and stay inside where its warm and safe. Get on the road only for emergencies.

The people I feel sorry for are the homeless around here - I hope they can find shelter to ride this out.

While you guys are freezing and prepping for disaster, it's going to be fairly sunny and mid 50s today at my house and I'm trying to talk myself into getting a short ride in.  It may be weeks before another chance.  I brought my helmet and gloves inside to warm up.

I have the gear but the motivation is wavering.  Grin

It was mid/upper 60's yesterday. I pushed the 'Wing out of the garage to ride it to get my customary "Weather's coming!" bread and milk and wouldn't ya' know it...

Dead battery...

Had to push it back in the garage and take the cage (Valk was blocked in by the cage and doesn't have the luggage to carry what I needed to get).

The Greenville SC Fox station said there are linemen from Fl. on their way to Upstate SC to help with the presumed downing of power lines by ice build up.

Not to downplay this action but it is the norm (or was the norm when I worked in electric generation) for commercial power companies.  I am sure there area a few that might not be as "cooperative" as they were some years back but....

I say this not to down play the item quoted above.  It is highly important and is what is at the very heart of what "Lineman" do on a daily basis.

Short story, I was working at the Crystal River Nuclear back in the mid seventies.  I was in Nuclear Operations I spent my working hours in the Control Room.  We had some additional people that were being trained for "Operations" positions and they also worked in the control room sort of learning what things were like.

One of these people was a gentlemen whose prior job with Florida Power Corporation was as a "lineman".  One night we got to talking about this job (he was in training for a Nuclear Operations position).  As we talked as asked him about lineman and the work they did and how they prepared for their work.

He told me about their (Linemen) work and how they could be sent almost anywhere with little or no notice.  I mean a couple of line trucks could be dispatched to a place 500 mile away with no real notice.  And they responded.  I asked him about things that he did to prepare for these events.

He opened his wallet and took out a $100 Bill.  I was sort of shocked.  That was a lot of cash back then to just carry around as a single note.  He said, "It was how they were prepared".

But this showed me that Linemen were special people who could be counted on to do a job and get it done right the first time.  Almost as impressive as a Nuclear Power Plant worker, where preparation and safety are job one.

Rams

I got out for a nice 3hr ride Ron.   cooldude

Chilly, but no wind and mostly bright sun.

But the Bozos had already sprayed that chloride crap all over the roads (no snow till Sunday, if at all) so I had a great big cleanup job when I pulled in.   tickedoff
