Second Year In A Row…

It's been stated that history does not repeat itself, but it certainly can rhyme!  I'm spending some time again this winter in Enterprise, AL. I did so last year as well... It was thought we'd be far enough south to miss most of the frigid temps and frozen precip engulfing my friends farther north. Well yes, obviously, that stands to reason... It does not, however, mean there are no cold temps, snow or ice around here!

It's really been more of a capitulation, as it usually seems to be, than it was a happy, deliberate choice to pause in some delightful locale. I don't set out to stay at a particular place; we just reach a point when riding on seems futile. I've resigned myself to this pause every winter, but normally in a different part of the country each time.

Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Texas, and Arizona have been obvious choices so far, but it has not been something planned out in advance. It just happens when I throw up my hands and declare, "No mas!", then I start looking for a decent hunker spot nearby. Never in the same exact location, but twice now in the same town.

I studied the weather forecast in earnest while stopped in Monroeville, AL, recently but nothing seemed promising. I could leave during the next weather window OK, but soon enough, no matter which direction I chose, the brief window promised to slam shut and leave us stymied for another period! "NO mas!!!", I finally declared; so, I found a suitable place to hibernate...

That's not the only sad refrain in this saga that rhymes, however... I arrived at my newest digs just ahead of some expected cold precip. I wanted to get some groceries ASAP, so we could avoid being forced to deal with anything nasty that might develop right away, so... I quickly unloaded our girl and headed to the store...

I purchased from memory the usual staples I'd be needing and made the trip as short as possible. Naturally I missed a couple of important items, but that's to be expected. I rode 'home' in a very light but cold drizzle.

By the time our girl was unloaded and the groceries put away, the moisture dividend had increased a smidgeon to a somewhat heavier drizzle... I decided to wait for a slack time to place the cover on our girl...

Things unfortunately steadily went the other way as the falling moisture and temperature both continued their noticeable decline... sigh... Oh well, I muttered, I'll just take care of that tomorrow... Very much like what had happened in this same town the previous year.

Unusual snow this far south in January 2025. One of the few times I hadn't placed the cover on our girl...

Unusual snow this far south in January 2026. I got caught not covering our girl again!

Once the horse was out, I closed the barn door... Alas, this happened yet again...

'Valkyrie Viagra' put in place just in case... Yes, after the greatest need for that thoughtful precaution had also passed, of course...

"Those who fail to learn the lessons of history are doomed to repeat their mistakes..." Yeah, yeah, I get it...

Bruce,
Sometimes my best guess turns out to be wrong.  It seems the same might have happened to you.  It was easier for me when 9 hour days in the saddle were no big deal for me.  Sudden changes in direction and/or distance were easy then.  Now, these old bones would rather hunker down than press on beyond an easy ride.  The weather will clear and I'll bet that ALI will be ready to go when you are.  She probably won't even care that you were lax in keeping her comfortable.  Keep on 12!

Next year you need to get a place that will let you use the garage.  Grin

You should have wondered a bit farther north and hung out with us.  It’s definitely cold out, but no snow or ice. The fire inside is nice and toasty … plus Ali could have hung out inside (the garage) with Bandit and the Big Guy.

Nonetheless, when you are ready to press on, the offer is still open.

Stay safe, healthy and warm my friend.

The 'garage' was not another oversight. While this townhouse does indeed have one, the owner uses it himself for storage, therefore it is not available for guest use... Some rentals I've used over the years do include use of a garage or carport, and I do always use them when available...
